The Lake Story
The sun was already high when he opened his eyes. Some of the more stubborn rays came through little slits in the curtains and created a beautiful pattern on his bed covers, though Fei was still too sleepy to even notice that. He wasn’t going to stare in awe at something that woke him up from his well deserved dream in the first place.
Well deserved dream. That’s something he hadn’t had for ages. Or so it felt.
Many things had changed in his life lately. He knew he was beginning to heal. But not physically. In that aspect he was almost completely healed. As much as it was possible, anyway. He’ll never be as fit as he was before, but those who didn’t know him earlier couldn’t tell something was not okay with his body. More importantly, he was beginning to heal inside.
He couldn’t tell exactly when it started. Maybe when Tao noticed the bruises on his body and stayed with him for the whole night crying and not wanting to let him go? He’d promised himself he’d protect the child and never make him cry like that again. Or maybe it was Alessandro who made him realize that his empire was starting to get weaker and weaker under a leader like him? Or Antonio’s letters..?
Antonio.
After that night when he had dreamt of him he was thinking of his lover more and more often. He hadn’t been able to stop those memories anymore.
And then he’d finally plucked up the courage to call him.
A short talk. About nothing. Just to hear the voice, just to let him hear his own voice. There were other talks after the first one. Lots of them. Some about nothing as well, but some about things as important as life. And then Antonio had asked if he might come to Hong Kong. And Fei had said yes.
And so, together with Angelo, he flew.
Even more beautiful then Fei had remembered him to be. Hair like liquid black diamonds, caressed delicately by the wind, eyes deep and dark and hypnotizing, skin smooth like honey... He’d remembered that it was sweet like it too.
The first thing Antonio had done after coming out of the plane was kiss him on the forehead.
But that was a month ago. Now it was summer.
Now he could sleep well.
Fei smiled faintly and touched his own brow.
‘Time to get up.’
-----
It was raining outside. Heavily. In fact it looked more like a vertical river than rain. Fei sighed.
‘I hate it when it rains like this. It’s depressing. I feel like I’m a five years old again and cannot play outside. What’s with this damn summer?’ He didn’t think anyone was there to hear him. A soft chuckle startled him. He spun around.
‘Antonio.’
The latter smiled.
‘You sounded disappointed. Did you have any plans for today?’
Fei pouted a bit.
‘In fact I did have some. And it was all sunny not so long ago. Why does it rain so hard right now? There’s so much water falling down that it looks as if the drops are having to queue.’
Antonio laughed. Then kissed him lightly, on the forehead.
‘I love you so much. And you keep reminding me why. That’s making me love you even more. And I didn’t think it was possible to love you more but you just proved me wrong. You keep proving me wrong.’
Fei Long turned his head away.
‘But I really do nothing to make you love me,’ he said quietly.
‘Amazing, isn’t it? I guess I should fear the moment you start.’
This time it was Fei who laughed.
‘So what was it that you wanted to do?’ Antonio asked.
‘I wanted to go to swim. But I guess it’s impossible today. Even if the rain does look like you can swim in it and before it hits the ground.’
‘You want to go at the sea?’ the younger man asked, obviously surprised.
‘No...’ Fei Long lowered his head. ‘Just a lake, to get some fun. There is one not all that far away from here.’
Antonio was watching the person he loved so much in silence. There were still memories Fei was struggling with. He was still not strong enough to win over some of them. But a decision to go out somewhere just to have fun was still a huge step forward.
He took out his cell phone.
‘There is something you have forgotten about, Fei.’
‘And what is that?’
Antonio smiled mischievously.
‘We’re both filthy rich. And that makes things much easier.’
They were already sitting comfortably aboard Fei’s luxurious private plane when the older man spoke.
‘I knew your family had summer houses all over the world and all but... Poland?’
‘What’s wrong about it?’ Antonio looked at Fei a bit surprised.
‘Nothing wrong. Only... there’s nothing there.’
‘You’ve no idea how wrong you are. Next time I’m taking you to a mountain trip somewhere there. But the lake first. You’ll understand when you see it.’
Fei Long started to feel a bit intrigued.
‘The boys will be mad at us when they find out we just flew away without even telling them, not to mention that without them too,’ he said after a while.
‘Don’t worry. I’ve left them a note and explained everything with details. They’ll understand.’
‘ “I took uncle Fei on a date” ??? What kind of note is that??? And how does it explain the absence of Fei-sama’s plane?!?’ Tao was staring at the bit of paper in his hands in disbelief. Then he heard Angelo talking to one of Fei Long’s most trusted men. Loudly.
‘What do you mean by “Somewhere in Europe”???’
He was so going to have a few words with his uncles about communication as soon as they came back.
He pretended to be angry a couple of seconds longer. Then he gave up and smiled.
Fei Long was staring at the lake in disbelief. It was the first time he saw something like this.
‘It’s so...” he started but couldn’t find any proper word to finish the sentence.
‘Small and ordinary?’ Antonio teased him a bit.
‘Utterly beautiful.’ He was keeping his eyes wide open to take in as much of the view as possible.
The first thing he noticed wasn’t the smallness of the lake. It was the silence of a place you have totally for yourself, its serenity. The smallness came next, but he didn’t have the time to even think about it because he noticed the trees right after that. They were growing all around the lake - it was surrounded by a forest, except for that little spot they were standing in that allowed them to approach the water freely.
Then he spotted water lilies at the other end of the lake.
Then the water, clear and smooth like a mirror, reflecting a couple of white, soft clouds floating above.
All together, the view was breathtaking.
Literally. As the buzz of bees flying somewhere around brought the stunned man back to reality he realized that he was holding his breath.
Antonio was grinning so wide that the top of his head threatened to fall off.
‘Told ya.’
Antonio was trying not to stare at Fei’s almost naked body. Too much. Or at least too obviously. Suddenly he realized how hungry he was and it didn’t have anything to do with eating. But he wasn’t going to rush anything. Just because he himself was ready didn’t mean he’d risk losing this person once again. He knew that one wrong move could screw everything up.
He decided that the cool water was what he needed right at the moment.
‘The last one in the water is making a dinner!’
‘Waaah! The water is simply great!’ Fei Long dived again. The way he was swimming and his long hair floating loose all around him like a veil were making him look like an exotic gold fish. Or a water sprite.
Antonio felt his cheeks were turning red so he dived too. I could do with those three wishes a goldfish might grant me, he though to himself and dived even deeper.
Fei Long noticed the boy’s... no, younger man’s strange behavior, even if he pretended he didn’t. Antonio was no longer a boy, he endured many things and sometimes acted wiser that he himself, but he was still young. Fei knew what his lover was struggling with. His lover... He glanced at him. The scars on his back were still perfectly visible, as well as the ones on his chest and shoulders. He lowered his eyes and looked at his scarred wrist, getting lost in his own thoughts.
Antonio’s voice startled him but also brought back to reality.
‘Fei, do you want to swim to those water lilies out there? The truth is it’s the first time I’m seeing them here and I want to take a closer look at them.’
‘Sure, I’ve never seen them this close either. Now, the last one to get there is washing the dishes after the dinner!’ he shouted and started to swim.
Antonio laughed.
‘You can’t get over the loss, can you?’
The other man started to laugh too.
‘That’s just not in my nature. I guess crime lords have it in their genes.’
‘Gosh, they’re so pretty. Makes me want to pick them and take them to the house.’
Fei patted his head.
‘Silly. And what vase would you put it into? In a normal one they’d look rather... flat.’
‘Hmm... I could put them to the bathtub.
Fei laughed and swam closer to the flowers.
‘It’d be a shame to pick them, here is where they belong. That’s the most incredible meadow I’ve ever seen,’ he said and swam among the lilies.
‘Hey! Come back here! It’s dangerous!’ Fei heard the young man screaming and felt a hand pulling him away from the yellow flowers. ‘You can’t swim among water plants like that! You can get tangled and drown!’ Antonio was nearly panicking.
I’m doing it again, thought Fei, I’m making him worried again, and over something insignificant like this too.
‘I’m sorry.’ Even if he felt that the youngest Amoroso was exaggerating, he didn’t want to upset him any more. He swam towards Antonio and hugged him, a bit clumsy as they were in the water, but it was still the first time he made a move. ‘Don’t worry, I’m okay.’
Then he splashed his lover with some water.
‘It’s all because you were watching too many movies when you were a child!’ He smiled and dived into the water, leaving stunned Antonio and the peculiar flowerbed behind.
‘I did *not!’ the* latter snapped back finally. ‘I haven’t even watched “The Godfather” yet!’
Fei turned around to face him and laughed.
‘You’re kidding! I thought it was an obligatory movie for you Amorosos.’
‘I’m not.’ Antonio was sulking a bit.
Fei Long smiled.
‘Then we’ll watch it together when we get back home.’
There was a moment of silence, then a smile and a quiet voice.
‘Yeah.’
Back home. Did it mean that Fei Long considered his own home Antonio’s too?
‘Hey Fei! Let’s swim over there. There’s one thing I want to show you. I mean if it’s still there.’
Fei grinned
‘For a lake you can swim from one end to the other and back in less than thirty minutes it has a lot of surprises.’
‘You bet! Have you ever dreamt of being like Tarzan?’
There was a crystal laughter carried by the wind blowing over the lake.
‘I can’t believe you! It’s a swing!’
‘Not a swing! A rope!’ He was holding the thing in his hand and gesticulating around. ‘The lake here is a bit like a little valley, only under a lot of water. The banks are therefore very steep, you can very nicely run down them. Add all those trees bending over the water and a Tarzan’s liana is an obvious outcome!’
‘So it’s no longer a rope but a liana?’ Fei Long was now grinning.
‘Just wait till you try it. You won’t let me have my turn.’
If there was a person standing at the other side of the lake they would maybe think they had just seen a black winged angel flying over the surface of the water and then plunged in. They would maybe even hear him and another creature standing on the shore laughing. But there was no one there to witness it anyway.
‘I told you you’d like it.’ Antonio pulled a warm towel over Fei’s body. ‘Even in water this warm you’ll get cold after some time if you’re this skinny.’ Then he kissed him, on the forehead again.
‘Antonio..?’
‘Hmm?’
‘Kiss me properly...’
They were lying on a huge bed in the summer house, embracing each other. Sleeping. Just sleeping, and yet it was showing how much had changed.
The first rays of the sun were starting to light the summer house. But this time they had made sure there is no slits in the curtains.
The dishes remained unwashed, by the way.
