The University of Michigan does not tolerate bigotry of any type.
When the university first learned several months ago that Chris Armstrong, the elected president of the student body, was being attacked in a blog because of his sexual orientation, staff in the Division of Student Affairs reached out to Chris to offer support.
We continue to take the situation very seriously. Above all we are trying to respect this student’s privacy and not let this unwanted situation interfere with his college studies and the ambitious agenda he has set for the Michigan Student Assembly in the coming year.
We teach our students the importance of engaging in respectful civil discourse. The university has a long-standing campaign to promote tolerance and civility called Expect Respect.
The university community stands by Chris Armstrong and his work on behalf of all Michigan students. As the university's elected Board of Regents said publicly at the Sept. 16 meeting, "When one member of our community is targeted, we are all attacked."
Christopher Armstrong, President
Chris Armstrong is currently a senior majoring in Sociology. Before becoming President of MSA, he served as the Chair of MSA’s LGBT Commission and an LSA Representative. In 2008, Chris was selected for an Outstanding New Member Award for his involvement with the Assembly and the LGBT Commission. On the Assembly, he has worked successfully toward bringing the 2011 Midwest Bisexual, Lesbian, Gay, Transgender, Ally College Conference to the University of Michigan. This past year, he facilitated a Project Community class focused on educating students about human rights. As a proud member of the Assembly, Chris has served on the Civil Liberties Board and the Student Relations Advisory Committee. He has also done Community Organizing work with federally subsidized housing units in inner-city Detroit.
I does seem to me that Shirvell is insane in the way that Hitler was: he believes some things to be true that are not in fact real or true.
