Yuletide Letter

First, sorry if this journal seemed to be abandoned. I have no excuses--I took a break from fandom, because there was a lot going on in real life. I'm not all the way back, but I know I'll be sad if I miss Yuletide.

Yuletide Letter

Dear Yuletide Author,

Thank you!! I appreciate that you've decided to write a story for me. If you matched with me on any of my requests (Sharon Shinn's Samaria, Juliet Marilllier's Sevenwaters, The Good Wife or Friday Night Lights) then we have something in common, and I can't wait to meet you and thank you.

Honestly, if you have a story idea that you've been wanting to write, follow the plot bunny wherever it hops. I will surely enjoy the result.

General likes: I like stories that are character driven, that are about the relationships they have with one another. I like love stories, and I love stories that explore family relationships.  Our family influences who we are, but somehow, we are not always who they expect.  Family brings out the best and the worst in characters, especially in these fandoms.

For example, in Samaria, Gaaron and Miriam have so much going on. And one of the things about Susannah's love story with Gaaron is that she doesn't just love him--she loves his family, his responsibilities, and she helps with that. I also like Gabriel and Nathan and Rachel and Maga and Ariel and Obadiah and Rebekah. What ever happened to their babies? Poor Alleya with her mom--and life with Caleb's family HAD to be fascinating. And what happens for Lucinda and Tamar after that fateful revelation? So anything, at any point in history. Hagar and Uriel also intrigue me--why make the choices they did? I also like the ways we see the class system of angels and Manadavvi and Jansai and Edori and farmers and city dwellers and musicians and craftsmen... Anything that explores their world a little more.

In Sevenwaters, well, it's all about family and character and how who you are can lead to great deeds, isn't it? What was it like for Colum's six older sons when they first came home? What did they speak of, when they transformed from swans into human beings while they waited for their sister to finish those starwort shirts? For Red and Simon in the days before they parted? I'm most interested in Sorcha's family, but will read anything. Bran's band is a family with it's own rules, and Liadan and Sean's children...well, they all have their charms.

In Good Wife, I love that so much tension comes from the conflict between Alicia's devotion to her family and her personal desires. I'm really curious about the backstory! How did Peter and Alicia wind up together? Why is Jackie how she is, and how is it that Alicia gets more help from her mother-in-law than her immediate family (we get hints of that this season, but still)? How did Will find his way to Chicago after Georgetown? I also want to know about the future. How will Grace and Zach remember this time in their lives? I'll be honest that my favorite characters are Alicia, Will, and Peter. I also think that Kalinda is awesome. Focus on whoever you want to.

Friday Night Lights--I haven't seen any of season 5. So can we stick to S1-4? I love the Taylor family, the Street family, the Riggins, the Collettes. Even the Garrity bunch...  And good lord, the McCoy family--they have some problems, don't they? I always wanted to know what Katie's breaking point was.  And the new kids from last year--Jess and Vince and Becky and Luke.  Of the Taylors, I always wanted to know about Eric and Tami's early life together. How did they find their way to one another? Why do Eric and Shelly have such tension? Texas, football, and family--it doesn't get any better.

Dislikes: For all that talk about family relationships, I simply do not understand incest in fics. I'm also not big on cruelty. Out of character behavior will pull me right out of a story--for example, if it's a story about Rachel, she shouldn't be docile if Gabriel gives her a command; Sorcha shouldn't act like a military strategist, Alicia shouldn't giggle, and Tami should know her football.

I hope none of this overwhelms you--I just want to say, really and truly and in advance, thank you very much. I can't wait to read what you write.

Thank you.

yuletide
