What is a BeadforLife Party?
A get together of people in support of women in Uganda, who make beautiful paper beaded jewelry. Coming together we will listen to African music, have yummy food, and have the opportunity to buy handmade colorful beaded jewelry. We will also have an opportunity to learn more about the Ugandan beaders and the BeadforLife project. This is really a fun way to see your friends and do something good for the world.… If you like, bring small glass beads to send to the beaders in Uganda!
History:
The Acholi people of Northern Uganda have been displaced from their home villages by a relentless civil war, that is now in its 18th year. These refugees live in a slum on the edge of Kampala, the capital of Uganda. Working in the hot sun crushing rock for a dollar a day is the alternative employment for the beaders. The bead project was created to help the beaders of the Acholi Quarter to establish an income generating cooperative business to sell the beads both in Uganda and North America. Besides bringing money to the more than 100 beaders directly, all profits go to a development fund that is growing for projects that will create sustainable development. We prioritize the creation of employment opportunities, education for children and youth, women’s issues, and health care..
The Beads:
These lovely designs are made from magazine pages rolled into colorful beads and strung together with seed beads to create artistic accessories. Each bead is unique and made with the love and hopes of the beader. We have several styles of necklaces, bracelets, and anklets for you to choose from. This affordable jewelry makes great gifts.
