Mary Blair Pinup Couture
Pinup Girl Clothing recently announced that their new spring line will be inspired by the art of Mary Blair, and I couldn't be more excited. I LOVE Mary Blair! She was a Disney artist, mostly active in the 1940s and 50s, and her distinctive graphic style influenced films like The Three Caballeros, Peter Pan, and Alice in Wonderland. It's her work for the Disney parks that Blair is most remembered today; she was largely responsible for the design aesthetic of it's a small world. She was a really great graphic artist, and her colorful designs are perfect for adaptation to textile patterns.
Pinup Couture's clothing line is not inexpensive, but I hope I'll be able to buy a skirt or a dress from the collection.
Maybe the Jenny dress with the commuters print? The whimsical design of the people riding the bus or train or whatever to work always makes me smile. Gotta love those ubiquitous cigarettes! Plus, I love the avocado green skirt matched with the black bodice. This will be so cute in the summer.
Or maybe a skirt would be better. I love the train border on this yellow Mary Blair skirt. It looks just like something you'd find in an old children's book. It's super whimsical and cute!
I would love to wear these and get my picture taken in Disneyland, but the price tags are pretty big (each item is over $100) so I don't know if I'll get a chance. I have a feeling that the smaller sizes will sell out really quickly, because Mary Blair is an artist who is crazy popular amongst the Disney fandom and these seem like they would appeal not just to retro dressers, but possibly to girls who dress in the Lolita style, too.
