Kitchen Cure, Week #1 Assignment. Declutter Pantry/Fridge

Feb 27, 2010 16:42

So I decided to join the Spring 2010 Kitchen Cure--a 4 week mission to declutter the kitchen and pantry. It fits in very well to my "Get rid of one thing everyday theme for the year".

Last night I took all my before pictures, but will only disclose them as I complete each section of the kitchen. Today, I took on my albatross--the hallway pantry. Technically, it's not really part of the kitchen, but because my kitchen is a galley style and doesn't have a pantry in it and because the builders created 2 full closets in the front hallway (one twice as wide as the other, I decided right after moving in, in 1988, that I would make the small closet into a pantry.

So at some point in 1989, I got the supplies I would need and added shelves, but it was an involved job and after only 4 of the planned 6 additional shelves went in, I came to a screeching halt. Instead of finishing all these years, I've had two wooden shelves, held up by stacked plastic cups behaving as "temporary" shelves. Yeah, since 1989.

See? And that's how it's been ever since. And here's the state of the rest of it--it's a space that has been begging for some attention and decluttering for a while now.

But now, after only a few mishaps (such as my ongoing and terminal inability to measure ANYTHING correctly), I got two new, permanent shelves installed.

To celebrate, I went through the rest of the pantry and decluttered and then put the pantry back together.

In fact, my efforts were so successful, I was able to pull more pantry items from a lower cabinet in the kitchen into the hallway pantry. This particular lower cabinet was also on the list of things I wanted to address during Spring 2010 Cure, so this is a good start as my Before and After there shows.

And After

And that's Day 1.
