Social rules continue to confuse me...

If someone gives you their business card, what are you supposed to do with it? Keep it on file for any future reference? Is it like getting someone's number, and you should e-mail them or call them in a professional manner within the week? If you wait a couple months without contacting them, should you expect them to remember you, even vaguely?

If you don't contact them for a while, are you supposed to throw out their card? Or keep it indefinitely?
