On the last weekend of February, Eli and I headed to New York City for his grandmother’s birthday. Every year it is a great excuse for his side of the family to get together for a large party. It’s always chaotic, and an excellent time!

Eli and the Giant Nitrogen
We took the red-eye out to NYC and arrived at around 7a. Neither of us were able to sleep so we were pretty exhausted. We dropped our bags off at the hotel and started wandering around checking out the sites. The first thing we noticed is that a number of corners had large tanks of liquid nitrogen sitting near the crosswalks.
According to some research done by my facebook friends, the nitrogen is used to keep moisture out of the electricity lines, or something like that.
After debating whether the liquid nitrogen was around for when you had instant ice cream needs, we went to Rockefeller Center and Nintendo World, and stopped in at the M&M store where I’m pretty sure they blow chocolate smell at the doors. They also had a wall devoted to every color of M&M you could possibly get. We almost got some black M&Ms just because, but in the end, common sense won out.

We also got tickets to see Avenue Q that evening which was a fantastic show! Not recommended for the non-raucous among us (I’m looking at you, mom) but it’s good fun if you don’t mind some irreverent humor.
The next day the temperature kept dropping, and neither of us had brought hats. We wandered around until I found the most ridiculous hat I could find, which you can see in the first picture. Pink with pompom and ear flap braids! One of Eli’s aunts mentioned that I looked 11. I took that as a complement.
This was the day we hit up the World of Disney store which was HUGE. The top floor was the best, with original artwork based on Disney works. All of it was way out of my price range, but there were many beautiful pieces.

That evening was the family dinner at an Italian restaurant near the hotel. It was excellent food, although I can’t remember what it was called. It was really nice seeing the whole family and I have to admit I enjoy watching the family interact.
What's this white stuff?
On Sunday, we had the large birthday party. A number of jazz musicians perform, and there is catered food for the event. This year it was smoother than any previous year which was fantastic. While the party was ending, it began snowing and we heard news that there was a blizzard heading our way.
The next morning, the snow was piled up, although we never got the full brunt of the blizzard. Being Californians, Eli and I had to go play in the snow!
No idea.
After roaming around a while we headed to the airport. Our flight was severely delayed because of the snow, but we managed to finally make it home at 2a. It was a fantastic trip and I loved getting to see everyone again. And the snow was pretty awesome, too!
