Eli and I spent the majority of the weekend working on the house. All the carpet is out, the tack strips have been removed (those things are EVIL) and staples have been pain-stakingly pulled out.
The Carpet-less hallway
In the photo above you can see the tack strips along the side, and anywhere you see a little “tuft” is a staple to be removed.
Hallway - after staple/tack removal
On Saturday morning I removed the carpet from the two bedrooms and dragged it out back because our agent’s husband came by and hauled it all away, which was marvelous! After the carpet was gone, we got down to the business of the aforementioned tack/staple removal. After cleaning the floor you can see that the floor has some water stains, but is otherwise in decent shape.
The rest of the house has the same hardwood floors as the living room, but they haven’t been refinished as recently. We believe the floors are actually the subfloors of the house; it’s just old enough that nice hardwood floor is what the subfloor looked like.
We’re debating what to do about the floors. We could carpet them, but after removing all those tack strips and staples, it’s hard to get excited by that. We could refinish them, but that is going to take a lot of time, or money, or both. Or we could just go with the old “area rug” which is starting to look really attractive as it requires the least amount of work and is easiest to revert when we get around to refinishing the floors.
In the meantime, we actually had one sunny day this weekend, so I took the chance to go outside and try out some paint colors. All the colors came from the inspiration post I made earlier, plus one extra that I threw in at the last minute.
Paint samples - 2 cottage, 2 Cratsman
The two on the left are cottage style colors, and the two on the right are Craftsman style. I was really hopeful about the top right; it was my favorite sample photo. However, in the photo it looks cream with sage green trim, here it looks like brown with brown trim, which I’m not interested in at all.
We both were really drawn to the two samples on the left. The blue is pretty, but likely too much for an entire house. We’ll probably try a few more blues and greens and see which one sticks.
There’s been a lot of rain recently, so I haven’t been able to get on the roof to sweep and clean gutters. We’ve also slowed down a lot this week on house stuff, as Eli’s grandmother died on Monday. :( He’s setting up plans to fly down to LA for the funeral and I’ll be handling the house on my own for the weekend.
We have the washer/dryer being delivered on Friday, and I need to start thinking about what I’d like to get done this week. Getting the floors out was such a high priority that I feel a bit aimless now. I should probably focus on painting, but that’s going to require sanding the walls and it’s very hard to get real excited by that.
