[PUBLIC] I guess I can live with it (if I have to...)

I mumbled about this on Twitter this morning when I first woke up, but I figured I'd actually be coherent here.

As much as I hate the red on Dick's new Nightwing costume, it does make a modicum of sense. In all the animated versions of Robin (who is always Dick Grayson and NEVER Tim Drake), he has had black in his costume. In Batman: The Animated Series it was always Tim's costume, never Dick's. Same with the Teen Titans cartoon. That is definitely Dick, not Tim, but it's TIM'S costume. Same with the new Young Justice cartoon. It is a modified Tim's Robin outfit, but it's a verified Dick Grayson.

So, I can see where they're coming from, as much as I dislike it. It smacks too much of Marvel changing their characters and lineup for the movie-only fans (of which I have a bad opinion of when it comes to comic books). Yes, granted, it's been Tim's --- oh. Okay, I kind of have to eat my words now. Tim's costume changed from green boots and gloves to black boots and gloves to mourn Kon's death after he died in Infinite Crisis...in 2005. Dickie was sporting the same costume (minus black boots) -- SORRY. Same costume as Tim's Robin costume. original Robin costume. Then Tim/Jason lovechild Robin pops up in the other costume (black-black-yellow-black-red-green). And in 2005, DC makes it Tim's costume. And now they're pushing it, or a stylized version of it, onto Dick in comics.

I'm not quite sure how I feel about this because I've gotten burned from Marvel doing this exact same bullshit. Granted, Marvel warps their characters and here we just have DC doing a costume change.

Except that when Dick has red in his suit, it generally turns out BAD. I mean, granted, I'm of the opinion that the Renegade suit was really Dick's way of going "ROY!!! I'm dressing up in a Nightwing-version of your costume, come and save me from myself and take me home for sweet lovings!!!!" Since, you know, it was during Outsiders and Dick wasn't in a good spot, and they have that whole beat down on each other moment in NW#114. So, with this new costume, I get the feeling that we're going to have angry Dick Grayson again. The red eyes in the mask really don't help dissuade me from this opinion either. (And I am veryvery upset over the lack of fingerstripes. Those stripes were...ohgodsosexy and meant I could do Nightwing nails...which I will still do ANYWAY.).

**sigh** I can see the reasoning. I am unhappy and slightly despondent over the whole thing but hey. We're getting Dick out of the Bat costume (which I actually think he was starting to make WORK at the end, even if he didn't like it in the first place) but we're losing the brother-love of Dick and Damian, which just saddens me, which it seems most of Tumblr agrees with because I've been spammed by art (which is all gorgeous and I am not complaining at all).

I'm going to try and stay happy about all of this. Dick, Roy, Jason, and Damian are all safe. We have NO idea about Tim, but he's honestly my least favorite Robin anyway (though he's not...too bad as Red Robin. ...yeah, he's too much like Bruce, can't like him as much as the others). Yes, they've...more or less massacred Babs's character (and I wonder how they're going to pull it off. Massive retcon? Surgery? Do tell, DC. How're you going to fix enabling a long-time disabled superheroine? As a relatively disabled person, this pisses me off.) but we can hope that they don't screw up...too bad, right? All else side, Gail Simone is writing Babs. She's awesome and I can only hold out hope for that. Sigh.
