This is the song that sparked me to make the mix. It was released in 2008 but has such an 80s feel to it. To me this is all about the tension between Alex and Gene, and specifically Alex's confusion over her place in this world.

I wouldn't put much talk in that 'cause the fact is

Not entirely fitting the theme but I couldn't deny this song. It's stark and beautiful, and full of dispair. Gene has more depth than he likes to let on.
