Ye gods the damn humidity finally broke around here. I'd rather stand naked in a snowdrift than be in sweltering-breathing-through-a-wet-towel heat. Since I work in a trailer with a metal roof I'm not a huge fan of summer workdays. Bleh.
In a plan to outwit the impending heat this weekend we're going to head down the shore. the kids absolutely love it and guido-watching/mocking is always worth the price of admission. Looking to leave somewhat early tomorrow to beat the traffic (ha!), which conversely lets us leave mid-afternoon Sunday and give us some time to unwind at home. Perhaps this weekend will be Becky's introduction to mini golf at the very same course her daddy learned on. I went berserk yesterday in Target and got the kids muchly summer clothes. Zackie's head almost exploded today when he had to choose between some of his new shirts - dinosaur, pirates, or Buster B (Buzz Lightyear, so named by Becky for unknown reasons). Buster B was the winner. Huzzah.
I almost had to run - we had such a big crowd they needed 3 DMs, but they figured they'd give me a break (I totally would have done it). I got nudged into a 4-7 game, which is what i wanted. Duane, our soon-to-be Pathfinder home game DM, was there as well and played a Kenku Sorcerer, which was tremendous fun. The guy who got pissy at me Sunday played a Drow sorcerer, and I'm going to give him the benefit of the doubt because he was playing a snooty character and say he's not a total d-bag (he could well be, though). Two guys I didn't know both played fighters, one a grappling type named INKYDOO! who was hysterical and incredibly effective. I got to play my cleric Thurg and used exactly NO healing words. None. Why? Well, the module was kind of flawed. The first fight was so-so, and my leader effects made a big difference. The second right was more challenging but two fighters were able to keep things occupied and the sorcerers just blew things to hell. I actually did ridiculous damage with at-will melee attacks - Sollinor's Hammer is a lovely new power from Dragon magazine for clerics and their resounding +2 warhammers wielded two-handed, thankyouverymuch. The DM skipped the only skill challenge because it was 'insipid', which the others agreed with (I love 4-7 mods because I've now played exactly 2 of them, so they're all shiny and new to me. There was much grousing about the lack of new 1-4s coming out as Wizards seems to be concentrating on the Encounters).
The final fight - okay, a trumped up young blue dragon who can stun until the end of its next turn is no pushover - but why would it be in a temple with 12 foot high ceilings? And why no minions, or anything to help it? It was strong, but I immobilized and dazed it with my daily (everyone seems shocked when I drop my utility daily, which is bless for a +1 to all attacks for the encounter. Or when I tell them to add 11 to their short rest surges. Does nobody else play clerics?) Let me put it this way - Inkydoo was, after some buffs, at like +19 to hit. Duane brought his Kenku into flanking, which gave him a +3, and then he aided Inkydoo for another +3. I didn't even bother to use a power that would have given him a +2 power bonus because it wouldn't have helped, he had so many. In the end he tore the dragon's spine out via the tail. I won the award for worst use of Moment of Glory as the round after I cast it I got stunned and thus couldn't maintain. Ah well. It was fun to play again and see Duane's obvious eagerness to start our home game. Laura's playing a halfling bard; a different Chris is playing an elven druid; Duane's wife Kat is leaning toward a barbarian. Since we don't know if we're going to be able to add two more players, I almost have to go with an arcane spellcaster. I love the elemental sorcerer build, but the draconic sorcerer makes for a much more tragic background story. So while the elemental would make life easier for us in combat, I may go dragon. Damn, I don't know! If we get twoother, say Richard and Carmine, I would switch to either monk or cavalier. or maybe inquisitor. But with a druid and bard on board - nice classes, but clearly supportive in role - we need damage sponges and pain givers. Man, I am psyched for this game! (even though I have to miss practice and it will definitely cut into time spent playing 4e at the shop, but hey, at our house, so no babysitter!)
