miles seizure

Aug 03, 2009 08:03

Valerie pointed out that I hadn't posted here about miles' seizure last week. Last weekend (8 days ago) Miles had a seizure. He had complained for two days of a headache, I was afraid he was starting into a migraine pattern since this is about the age I started getting mine. He felt good enough to get into swimming pool in the afternoon of Sunday but wasn't his usual wild self in the pool. He was a bit subdued. later that night he fell asleep on the couch (one other factor I want to point out just for my own records is that it was HOT, it was the start of 10 days in a row of 90 degrees or higher (many of them in the 100's)). Barry and I decided we didn't want Miles sleeping downstairs on the couch by himself, it was hotter down there than in our room (where the other kids were sleeping on the floor) so Barry went down to wake him up and bring him upstairs. As soon as B started trying to wake him Miles opened his eyes, one of his eyes rolled back and the other stared straight through him. Barry yelled upstairs for me, I ran down and by the time I got there he was in a full body seizure. it lasted probably 30 seconds (during which time I called 911), after he was still very out of it, confused for at least 15-20 minutes. We went to the hospital in the ambulance, they gave him oxygen since his level was a bit low. He was going between laughing and crying, which is pretty normal after a seizure. He was mainly scared that the emt's were going to put in an IV (the poor kid has had his share of sticks) At the hospital the nurse was terrible, very abrupt, poor people skills. She didn't really talk to us at all, then walked out of the room without saying what was going on...if a doctor was coming, if she would be back anything at all...very annoying and scary. A doctor did finally come in, looked over the chart and then talked to us for a few minutes. He said that there reallly wasn't anything they would/could do at the hospital. They couldn't verify a seizure unless he was in the throws of one. That he wanted us to follow up with our regular doc and a neurologist but that we were free to go home. If Miles had another seziure that night he wanted us to come back but that we could transport ourselves. We came home.
Miles was very subdued for two more days but then back to his normal self. We saw Dr. Wolfe the next day, she did an initial neuro exam and said it looked good but that he should see a neuro doc. We can't get in until October at the "best" doc in the area and are trying to get in to anyone else.
About 13 months ago he had a very similiar episode and had extensive test at that time, all came back normal. He'll repeat all thsoe tests to see if there is anything of significance that is different. we'll see.
calling 911 while watching Miles seize was the scariest moment of my life. Then hearing how confused he was afterwords made my heart skip a few beats. It was so scary. We are watching, making sure he is hydrated, well rested, kept cool. Not that any of those things will prevent a seizure but will make him more comfortable all the way around.
