Football and sore throats

Dec 05, 2005 17:35

Having a sore throat and not being able to talk is overrated. On Saturday Manteca High School, my Alma Mater, won the Division III Section title for football. They won against the one team they had lost to in the regular season. Regular season game at Sonora, the other team, they played and lost 31-28 on a controversial play. 4th down. 28 yards to go for the win. Last play of the game. Quarterback drops back, looking for an open receiver, scrambles out of the pocket, ducks one defender, stiff arms another, runs forward toward the line of scrimmage, throws a pass, the receiver catches it and makes it into the endzone. Touchdown. they win. right???? Wrong :(:( Referee says the quarterback crossed the line of scrimmage before he threw the ball. No catch. No touchdown. They lose. The only defeat of the season. 11-1 record. tie for league champs with Sonora and Weston Ranch. Manteca beat Weston Ranch and Weston Ranch beat Sonora. Weston Ranch loses first game of playoffs. Sonora wins theirs and has a 7-4 record now. 2nd week Sonora and Manteca win again. They will play for Section Title. Oh yeah, I forgot to mention the comment made by the Sonora coach after the first victory. "Manteca's defense was soft. That is why we won." So Manteca has a lot riding on the game. Well they proved they were the better team. 1st play from scrimmage after the kickoff, they run 76 yards for a touchdown. next series 3 and out. the following series, 1st down, 80 yards for a touchdown. and they held the Sonora offense to 75 yards total for the game. not so "soft" at all. Final score was 34-7 Manteca. And my throat is sore cuz I was in the stands in 25 degree weather cheering for my team.
