During Dylan's stay this weekend he brought along Infinite. I've played a bit and will share some thoughts, without the threat of plot spoilers, so no worries. I don't think I'm anywhere close to finishing it and honestly, not completely understanding everything that's happened thusfar.
First and foremost, Rapture destroys Columbia in virtually every conceivable way. Rapture, despite its decay, felt so alive. Water was everywhere, viewports in to the ocean and so forth, you always felt you were truly in a city beneath the sea. Columbia is not in a state of disarray. At least, not to the point that I've gotten to. There are some gorgeous vistas of buildings floating in the clouds, don't get me wrong, but it just feels like a normal city. Sometimes, it feels there's no life at all. There are times when you wander through the streets and there's no one there. Civilians, policemen, nothing. The bright color palette is refreshing but that's about it. It's a normal looking city with a bit of patriotic flair.
Plasmids have been renamed Vigors. They function in the same way as previous games but there's no storytelling element to explain why they exist. In Bioshock 1, there was Adam, Eve, the Little Sisters, etc, and it was all explained in one form or another how they were discovered, created, and tied in to one another. Here, it's just, "Hey, have a Vigor!" and Booker injects them all willy-nilly. In the first game, the first Plasmid you acquire, you're like, "shit, wtf am I doing?"
The Skyline rail system is a bit disorienting but not as badly as I thought it would be. You can control your speed even up to the point of stopping entirely. But there are cutscenes here and there where you can look around but the speed is set and it's a little, eh, jarring.
You can only carry two weapons at a time. It's not terribly inconvienent as there's always more to pick up. Weapons can be upgraded but their physical appearance does not upgrade like in previous games. Further, the hacking and crafting systems are gone entirely. I think that's about it. Steve if you have any questions let me know and I'll try to answer.
So, overall, it's a fun game. But it's not Bioshock 1, or even 2. I really don't think the Bioshock title truly belongs on this game. But if they'd called it something else it probably wouldn't have sold as well.
