Overall I liked Shield though I can see why it wouldn't be everyone's favorite.
That was kind of a boring teaser, huh?
We start with Lois doing nothing but complaining about what should have been her exciting new assignment. How does Perry put up with her? And 1001 Arabian nightmares -- it's apparent that even with Chloe gone the writers aren't going to give up the pop culture references .
Lois complains about her dream job and takes over Chloe's dubious pop culture references.
Moving on to Metropolis we get to meet Clark's new partner, Cat Grant. She informs Clark she's of no relation to the Cat Grant we met last season -- one reason apparently being her name isn't really Cat Grant at all. When she shows off some of her finer work. "Mean Arrow: Hero destroys playground" I like her immediately. Maybe because it takes me back to Lois' Inquisitor articles about the Green Arrow.
How can you dislike someone who writes that?
After the credits things don't exactly get to exciting right away either. Oliver is working on Chloe's abandoned computers. It's boring enough when Chloe does it and Oliver doesn't make it any sexier. Maybe because for once he actually has his shirt on. Which is doubly weird because he's expecting a woman caller. When was the last time Oliver wore a shirt when there was a woman on the way?
Oliver greets Tess -- and he's wearing a shirt. Smallville finally breaks the mold!
Considering that this woman happens to be Tess he's probably wearing a shirt to cover the a flak vest underneath. But the ex-lovers are surprisingly corgial for once. They even share Choe's break up emeil
You read that right. Chloe broke up with Oliver via Email. I don't know about you that that doesn't scream love of a lifetime to me. Even Lois had the courtesy to write a letter. And while Lois is a lot of things courteous isn't one of them.
I've never loved anyone like I love you. And I never will again. Somewhere Jimmy rolls in his grave. I mean Henry rolls in his grave.
You're my knight in shining leather? The helmet did a number on Chloe, didn't it? Make we wonder if sometimes Chloe spent nights buffing Oliver's outfit with Armor All .
Let's got back to the deserts of Keyna for a moment. I like Micheal Shanks. He's a step up from your typical guest star. (Two fo the the three Suicide Squaders, I'm looking at you.) Lois' questions about Clark are a lot of fun. How can he ride in a car? No kidding. I'd hate that if I had super speed.
I'm not sure if Lois knew who Carter was from the get go or not. Presumably she could have known him from writing about the Justice Society last year but she doesn't let on.
Lois and Carter - Desert bonding.
Switching back to our A plot I find it intersting that Cat starts out annoying Clark -- just like Lois used to. And she's got a problem with the vigilanties -- just like Lois used to. Their likes and dislikes, and personal back story are polar opposites -- Amy Grant vs White Snake, Kittens vs Moster Trucks, valivictorian vs College drop out -- but their initial reaction to the vigilantes is exactly the same.
Cat Grant's desk. Polar opposite of Lois
And is the look TW nails in response to Cat's "Why would anyone want to kill me?" not perfect?
Remember when Clark used to react like this to Lois?
Clark takes Cat to the safety of the Talon without letting Oliver in on the plan. Still, there's no reason to assume Oliver would be skulking around the apartment. Much less that'd he actually attack Cat.
I'm not sure why Oliver changes into GA when Cat arrives. And I have no idea how he can change in .5 seconds. But it's a really funny scene.
Even though Cat has a bag full of tricks she's no match for GA. Ashame there was no flirting like he used to do with Lois.
Meanwhile Clark makes himself at home in Tess' office and Tess doesn't really like it. I gather Tess isn't worried about Checkmate anymore since she's back at the Planet.
What I don't get is Tess' inability to have a conversion without bringing up Lois. I think I liked her better in her season eight days of Lois dismissal.
Tess seems to have volunteered to be Clark's research engine now that Chloe's gone. I guess as part of her attempt to redeem herself thought I'm not sure I like her in this capacity. I do like that is bodes well for more screen time with Clark without getting beaten. On the flip side seemed partially de-clawed this episode. Oh, Tess, I hope you haven't lost your mojo.
Deadshot kind of reminds me of Woody Harrelson. I don't know if that's good or not.
Deadshot. Am I the only one you thought Woody Harrelson here?
The fact that Cat has a kid humanizes her a little and seems to give Clark a reason to like her better. And gives us some insight into Clark. So that scene is full of win.
Lois and Carter work well together. I like Carter's relationship advice but think they went a little bit overboard on the Hawkman backstory. Is it really needed considering it takes valuable time away for the A plot? I try to stay spoiler pretty spoiler free but I don't live in a complete bubble so I get that part of this is probably laying ground work for future episode(s).
At least they didn't stick Hawkman in the already crowded Lazarus like they put Metallo in the premier last season.
How great is it to have some action set on location instead on on the sound stage? This is two episodes in a row that don't feel all claustrophobic. I hope they are able to keep it up with the on site locations.
The ubiquitous use of suicide squad logo kind of bugs me. Checkmate was bad enough but at least it was only use on their premises.
The Suicide Squad made an appearance on Smallville. Did you notice?
It was a dark and stormy night at Watchtower. And Oliver tries to blam Clark for Chloe's disappearance. What a surprise. I'm glad Clark pushed back so hard.
Good for you, Clark.
The jury is still out on the new suit.
The new suit. I hope Jor-El is happy. Then again maybe this is Clark's way of trying to get Jor-El to give the other one back.
To sum it all up:
Clark was strong and sure of himself. Oliver didn't whine too much. Tess didn't get beaten up. Lois was funny. And me, I'm feeling better about the season already.
