Okay, I got the malware off. It wasn't easy, and it took HOURS. That SUCKED, and if I ever find the guy who wrote that particular piece of nastiness, I will become rage incarnate and dismember him on behalf of the world, then nail his head up to a pike outside my house, and every day I will wave to it like Vir Cotto to Mr Morden.
So in the end, I had to put a fresh registry in, then imported the old one and deleted the entries associated with the SMSS32 virus, which was a real piece of work (

So what I ended up with was a duplicate of mom's login and all the associated files. I can log in, but half the system doesn't actually work. Can't get online, none of hte software works, it's a pain in the ass. (Wireless says "I found a network" but then it's not there when I go to connect -- can't see ANY of the half-dozen active wireless connections I know to be present.
My instinct tells me that if I could integrate her old entry with her new one, everything would reconnect. I just don't have the deep expertise in this sort of thing. How can I get the system to recognize everything again without having to reinstall windows, or reinstall all the software from scratch?
Any of my tech-nerd friends got a suggestion?
