One of the things I have learned from spending long periods of time in the ocean is that the saltwater somehow tends to make the snot come out of your nose and hang on your upper lip in a little ball. This usually goes unnoticed because your whole face is wet anyway and you can't feel it. I've been out to Pacifica with a number of first-time surfers recently, and the majority have fallen prey to the stealthy hanging snot ball (including myself). So next time you go to the beach, don't forget to wipe your nose often.
