Author's Notes: Written on a whim for artemisrae, who was complaining about there not being enough HTTYD fic. I sympathize.

“Do you plan this?” Hiccup asked, mildly irritated. “Last time we were out of bandages and I had to use my last clean shirt, and now the floor’s all dirty. I just mopped, you know.”

Astrid, who was holding her bleeding right hand away from her body in an attempt to keep her clothes clean - and thus making a mess of the floor - gave a little huff in reply. This was Hiccup’s usual response when she showed up on his doorstep with some new minor injury that needed to be patched up. He fussed over the state of the house, and the state of her, and the minor inconvenience she was causing him in precisely the same way her mother did. It was more than a little annoying, but it was also endearing, and he was gentler with her than her mother ever was.

She didn’t wince at the first prick of the needle or at the pull of the thread through her skin. Her eyebrows scrunched down in discomfort, but that was the most reaction something as paltry as stitches could get out of her now. Still, Hiccup glanced up at her, his entire face expressing thinly veiled concern. Astrid gave him a cool smile, and he bent back over her hand with a little laugh.

They sat in silence while he worked. Nine stitches later - two each on the first two knuckles, and another five for the gash on the back of her hand - he was tying off the ends of her bandage. She waited apprehensively, suddenly nervous for what she knew was coming next, and had to swallow back the lump in her throat when he lifted her hand to his lips and brushed a kiss across the bandages. Her face felt hot.

“Better?” he asked, smiling at her in that knowing way that made her stomach turn little somersaults.

“Almost,” she said, biting her lip around the sudden smile blooming on her face. She leaned forward a little, and he mirrored the action, her one hand still clutched firmly in both of his.

“Oh?”

“There was one other thing,” she said slowly.

His breath ghosted over her lips as he breathed, “Yeah?”

She tilted her chin, watched as his eyes began to slip closed, and then sat back, pulling her hand out of his and propping her left leg up across his knee with more force than was necessary.

“Yeah,” she said, pointing to the gravel burn that had torn clean through her leggings and taken the skin off most of her knee. “I think I need more bandages. I’m still bleeding.”
