Author's Notes: Another one where the circumstances make little sense, but... just go with it!
“If you kick me again I’m going to leave you here to die,” Brick ground out, trying to lean away from Buttercup’s uninjured, flailing right leg without letting go of what was left of his sweatshirt. He was wrapping the shredded garment tightly around the profusely bleeding wound in her left calf, wondering why - why?! - the injury wasn’t healing.
“No you’re not,” Buttercup said, laughing weakly. “Even you’re not that bad.”
“Try me. This is gonna hurt.”
“It already hur-gah!”
Brick swore as her good foot caught him in the shoulder again, but he didn’t let go of the fabric in his hands or stop what he was doing. Blood was already soaking through.
Quietly, suddenly still but for the subtle trembling of the injured limb beneath his hands, she asked, “Is… is it really that bad? It feels pretty bad.”
“It looks pretty bad,” he replied, the thought of lying to her never once crossing his mind. “I hope your dad can regrow legs,” he said as he gathered her up with all the gentleness he could muster - which, as it turned out, wasn’t a lot. “We might need it.”
She paled at that, and looked a little sick, and even though she was still shaking, she didn’t flinch. “Why are you helping me, anyways?” she said, her eyes focused on some distant point in the sky above them.
“Because,” he answered simply, taking off in the direction of her house, “you owe me now.”
Of course, Buttercup thought, something shrinking in her chest. What little was left of her stomach dropped out from beneath her when she wondered how he would collect.
