today was my last day of work for a week. i spent all day checking things off lists (turn in timesheet, update work logs, check voicemail, check email, update work logs, etc.) and then finally, it was 5:30. i thought the day would never end, especially the last few hours of it.

but then i was riding home on the train, watching the city slip away from me, and i realized that it's been a month. a month of spending 10 hours a week minimum on buses and trains, of buying chai lattes at saxby's and walking through hallways like i own them.

it feels like so much longer.

i was thinking about this today, when i was going down the escalator and realizing that just a couple weeks ago, i used to wonder how many of the people passing me by on the platform worked in my building. that was back when i didn't know anyone. now i greet them by name. we walk up the long stair together, laughing and talking. we get our chai lattes together and open doors for each other. i have become one of those people i used to pass on the street in dupont circle.

when i came home, there was a present waiting from the lovely and talented miss howie, and i opened it because i'm not going to be here for christmas. inside were two beautiful (and i'm guessing hand-painted) scarves, a lovely silver bangle for my little wrists, and photos of the entire life of my precious godson.

sascha and i made some dinner and then watched the last disc of MI-5 season 3, which was, alas, not as good as the first two seasons. i think that my problem is my love for matthew macfayden, and his character, and so when his character left the show, i lost interest. plus it gets slightly more real, which freaks me out.

after all that, i packed up all our stuff, which i managed to fit into sascha's suit bag. my bag will have the few presents i have to transport to milwaukee, plus the holly i'm picking for mom. it was going to also have cookies, but that proved to be too much for us this evening. we'll figure something out tomorrow, i guess.

now he's sleeping upstairs, and for the first time in a long time, i'm the last one awake here. it's 11pm on a friday night, and i plan to put away some leftovers and then go upstairs, crawl into bed and pass out.
