Trouble in Tinsel Town

Oct 16, 2007 00:12

Have you seen a movie recently? Enjoyed another episode of Heroes or Grey's Anatomy? Good, good. I'm pleased you're spending your after school time wisely. However, School (and yes that means you), there is a gathered group of workers lurking in the shadows, threatening to take away our Weapons of Mass Distraction. I'm talking about none other than the Alliance of Motion Picture and Television Producers. Since its hard typing the Alliance of Motion Picture and Television Producers everytime I need to mention them, (and oh yes it will be mentioned) They will just be called the AMPTP from here.

So, School, you're probably asking me (and by me, I mean Yourself) how does the AMPTP affect me? (or You?) Good Question! (Thank You). Well I'll tell you. Those lovely show we like to devout more hours to than homework everynight are written by what some people may call (or even question if they really exist) a Writer (Hey, that's me!). Along side the writer are the people who spend the money creating these shows, I call them Producers. A group of "Writers" have come together and formed a Union called the Writers Guild of America (WGA). The WGA has signed a contract with the AMPTP to create Motion Pictures and Television programs together (Yayy!!) However, their contract ends this month on October 31st. Now the WGA and AMPTP are currently holding meetings to renegotiate their joining vows but things currently look grim (and spooky, It's Halloween after all). The WGA is complaining that the existing contract applies only to outdated technology. The "Producers" are not sharing any of the profit that a Film or Telvision seris makes off DVDs, iTunes, and Memorabilia Lunch Boxes (The only person I trust to guard my lunch is the 6 Million Dollar Man). The "Writers" are asking for the royalties on these internet sales, such as iTunes, and DVDs. These so called "Producers", all high and mighty on their horses, dont think there is anything wrong with the contract and won't budge (or get off their horses). So whats the WGA going to do about it? What any natural free loving, 1st Ammendment hugging, American would. Strike. (while the Iron is still hot)

Well... thats kind of a health hazard and might be irritating to the skin. The WGA encourages its members to keep working even after the contract expires, but if the AMPTP doesnt meet their demands by June 2008, school wont be the only thing out for summer. So why did the WGA chose such a far away date to official start their strike? Well there is also a such thing as the Directors Guild of America (DGA) and the Screen Actors Guild (SAG). Want to guess when their contracts with the AMPTP runs out? (you smart cookies). Thats right, if the AMPTP doesnt reach an agreement with the WGA by June 2008, the DGA and SAG vow to join the Writers cause and strike with them. Thats very bad news for the U&ME. No Writers, Directors or Actors. Our summer line up sounds amazing. (Say it with me again, amazing). We're talking about a $300 Million dollar industry coming to a complete hault (and then possible going into the fetal position.)

So what is Hollywood doing to prepare? Word of mouth (mostly mine) is that there is a list of the top 300 projects that Agencies and Production companies are trying to finish before the big S-Day (S is for Strike, and possibly Six Million Dollar man.) The list includes the next Narnia triology, the next Harry Potter, a 4th Fast and Furious, a Sherlock Holmes film and the list goes on (like the cleaning of a house, it never ends). These films are being shot throught the standard protocol of movie making faster than spit off the 2nd Floor landing (I did the tests to prove it). Everyone is rushing to create enough material to last through the aftermath of S-Day if it does happen. All the big names such as DreamWorks, Columbia, Paramount, Warner Brothers, Miramax, Disney, and Universal are working overtime to get their blockbusters ready to go. We've reached BYOBW status.(Bring Your Own Bottled Water, theres no time for water Cooler Conversations). So what can you do to prepare? How about writing a check to the next writer you see? More specifically me. Enjoy your favorite prime time fall shows while they last Students of CCHS (technically im suppose to address CCA as well... but I wont), our favorite shows might become extinct (like Saturday Morning Cartoons).
