I read an opinion today on AOL, about the connection between intelligence and self esteem. For the most part it was an interesting opinion, seemingly well though out, but one part struck me oddly, was when he wrote, " One of my Jesuit teachers liked to say that "be yourself" is absolutely the worst advice you can give some people. He's right: This is not the kind of advice that we want to give to a Charles Manson or a Hitler." My problem with that statement, is that irregardless if Charles Manson or Hitler were 'themselves', if the people they controlled, were THEMSELVES, the heinous acts would not have been committed. So I disagree, be yourself is the BEST piece of advise you can give anyone, the more one is in touch with themselves the less likely they would be to follow. Unless of course you are trying to create followers, (religions, military, passive citizenry) then of course DEGRADE AWAY!
