I've had such an interesting past few days.
On Thursday, I got out of work late because I stayed after to interview my chief of staff, Karla, about how she got to reach this position. Her life story was fascinating, she worked for Planned Parenthood, went to the LBJ school, and has done so much for several nonprofits, as well as worked in the private sector as a consultant. She was inspiring to talk to, and she gave me hope to realize that there are several different paths to take to reach your goals. She was able to overcome so many struggles in her life, and really, I was so touched by the entire conversation. After work, I met Andrew for a quick dinner, and we read the newspaper together. Then, I came back to Georgetown and went to see the performance of Body Dialogs. I came in late and missed the first two acts, but overall, it was so funny, and very well done. My favorite was the scene where two guys explained how to hide on erection - it was hilarious! After the play, there was another Korouva dance party in honor of the actors. It went pretty late into the night, I felt very social, and I hung out with a lot of different people. I got to talk to Nick about Germany, and met Logan (Walker's friend) who drunkenly spoke German to me, but doesn't remember doing so. It was a good night, there was a lot of dancing - it was discovered that Eva is an amazing dancer, and I ended up going home pretty late, which sucked because I had a huge paper for Mass Comm due in the morning.
Friday evening I worked in the admissions office for Brown/Dixon scholarship weekend. After work, I went with David, Walker, Joel, and Eric to see a lecture at Monkeywrench Books in Austin about the Zapasita movement. It was really good, this girl talked about what the goals of the movement are and what the economic and political implications entail. It was over an hour long, and the girl spoke in spanish, but had another girl has her translator. I was vaguely familiar with the subject before going to the lecture, but now, I want to read more about it and I'm thinking about writing a paper for one of my classes about the impact of NAFTA and US foreign policy on the subject. After the talk, we went to a really cool Mexican restaurant in Austin, and then came back to Georgetown and went to Walker's house. I listened to them play music for awhile, then a bunch of people came over, and Colin taught us all to play "Green Glass Door", which ended up going on forever, and produced many confused faces.
Saturday was the Big Hoo Haa, where everyone sat on the mall, painted vaginas, ate cookies, drank tea, did yoga, tye-dyed various clothing items, made art, listened to Walker, Eric, and Nick play, and I finger painted while sitting in the sun. It was such a nice afternoon, and I stayed outside for most of the day. Then, Walker came over and we had dinner at Nonna's. The food was amazing, and after we visited David, Natalia, and her family at Korouva as we waited for Ben to get off work to go to the concert with us. Ben, Walker, and I met up with Walker's friends to see
Daniel Johnston at the Parish. The show was so good, a string quartet opened for him, and then another band played that wasn't very good, but tolerable. The concert was packed, but being in a small venue was awesome because we were able to get pretty close. It was depressing to watch, he shook a lot, and seemed overwhelmed, but sounded really good. He sang "True Love Will Find You in the End", which is one of my favorite songs. I'm so glad I went, and it was fun meeting Walker's friends (Kevin, Logan, and one other guy whose name is escaping me) and hanging out with Ben (who actually ran into some guys he was in a band with and introduced me to). The show was over at about 1, we drove back to Georgetown, singing Kelly Clarkson as we came down the Leander exit. There was a huge party at Walker's house for Colin, Vickie, and someone else's birthdays. I had a lot of fun dancing, talking to people - in particular a conversation with Liza, Jerrad, and Martin where we discussed Martin resembling a polar bear. The police came by for a noise complaint, but no one got in trouble, and I ended up leaving pretty late.
Today, I'm at work, I had lunch with Liza, and tonight I'm going to watch the Daniel Johnston documentary - if I can find it - with Walker and do some homework.
I'm very overwhelmed with my entire study abroad situation - I have so many essays to write and paper work to fill out. I'm beyond stressed about the cost of everything, and I don't know what I am going to do. I had a breakdown this weekend, well, several actually, but I'm trying to be optimistic. I'm going to probably get another job - maybe at the Bistro - and I think that will be somewhat of a relief.
I'm going to Nevada in 4 days! I'm so excited to see Brooks!
