*eyes the little nightstand, and reaches over to open its drawer... fishes around in there for a sec, and pulls out what looks like a wrapped-up snack bar or something, only the wrapper's about as drab as military-issue boringness could be. He sits back on the bed again, and offers it to her*
We didn't have any potatoes or eggs or anything. We had this stuff. You can try it if you want... doesn't taste like anything, though. *small shrug* I came here, and there's all this other stuff that Abel was showing me to eat. He gave me some of a baguette, and some eggs, and some bacon, and the bacon was the first thing I ever tried that....
*shakes his head* I mean, I know what blood tasted like; it's not like I never bit my lip before. And dirt, and paint... don't ask. I don't-- *shakes his head again, a little self-depreciative laugh* I shouldn't have been standing there at the time.
But I know people have to sleep, even if I never had any dreams before I got here. It's just... how it works, right? So that's why I know about it. And you? You've always had food that had flavors, haven't you? So you're used to the other stuff, and... a lot of other things that I've never seen in the Junkyard. And Abel too. He was showing me a lot of things.
*a lil pause, not sure how to phrase it, but finally just asks* You think maybe, while he's away, you could show me some things here too?
[She looks at the ration for a moment before carefully taking it from him. She unwraps the package and takes a small bite from it. It was bland. It didn't taste like anything she's ever had and she couldn't even begin describing it herself. Now she understands why he seemed so fascinated by food now, especially if this really was all he had before arriving in Somarium.]
[Listens intently to him and is caught off guard when he had said paint. How could he know... She doesn't question it further than that.]
I understand where you're coming from. It's just that... [A short pause, as if she were thinking a little] I've never looked at it that way.
[She's a little surprised by his request but she was more than glad to help him learn more things outside of that Junkyard place he used to live in. After all, she's always wanted to bring him out a little bit more than Abel did. She winks at him, her smile never faltering.]
Of course I could, Harley. If there's anything you want to ask, go right ahead!
*little smile more, thinking about it* Um.... *great, what to ask? What to ask.... He knows there's a ton of stuff, but none of it comes to mind at the moment, and he's not sure why.*
....
*well, there was one thing.*
Abel never really wanted to explain how it was that females make other people. Is that just something they do in some worlds? Because none of the females in my Tribe ever made so much as a new finger if someone lost theirs.
*wait. Babies were... they were... really little people, weren't they? Only, they looked like adult humans, the way the toys he was just making looked like the monsters they were based off of, kind of. Little, more rounded....*
*sighs, leaning with his elbows on his knees, to frown at the carpet*
There weren't any babies in the Junkyard, and none of my Tribe made other people. New recruits would come in from outside, and... I never really thought about it, I guess.
Things were really different in the Junkyard, weren't they? [She gives it some thought, thinking how to explain things to him. Bends over to look at him.]
You do know what babies are though, right? You did get it right though. That they come from females.
*doesn't comprehend. Clothes and dolls and things are made out of fabric. Food is made out of... other food. Houses are made out of wood and paint and stone and stuff like that. So why would telling him what people get made out of be embarrassing?*
[Composes herself to give it some thought. She's not really sure how to explain it herself. She's been going into a giggling fit every time she tries to or when he even thinks about it.]
Maybe you could try looking for a book about it? I'm sure it'll be able to help you better than I could.
*sigh. So figuring out what the heck they were talking about would have to wait until tomorrow. Probably for the best anyway; he wasn't entirely sure how quick he'd be on the uptake while tired. Besides, he wasn't sure where such a book would be.*
No more eating his socks....

Harley, are you asking where babies come from?

*looks back over to her. For whatever reason, this isn't quite connecting*
So what do they make babies and people out of?

Gee, Harley. You're asking so many embarrassing questions!
