It seems like merely a week or less ago when I posted an exciting special Terrorism Day post, complete with a sexy new V For Vendetta theme and a cute little image of Osama Bin Laden Airways I found on the internet. Dear dark and spiky Queen, there is a vital point you are forgetting...
We are not a homogenous mass. We are a vast number of very different individuals, all of whom can be united only under the flag of some very ill-defined anti-American anti-Bush sentiment, and no specific policy. Let us remember back to the Middle ages, when one could say “I am a Christian” and it would be immediately understood what that means, as a blueprint of your beliefs, your allegiance, and your purpose in the world. However, now when one says “I am a Democrat” or “I am a Greens supporter” or “I am the Queen of Lizards” - we are still no wiser, because these groups even internally feature a massive range of opinion. Organising these liberals is like herding cats. These days it isn’t easy. And when its easy, it happens spontaneously- everyone is thinking something revolutionary, but only one person is needed to catalyse their impulse into action (eg. Lenin’s “What is to be done?” 1902). We haven’t got the luxury of being blatantly and obviously downtrodden. We don’t have an enormous economically impoverished peasant class, harboring generations of rage against the state. We have an enormous intellectually impoverished middle class, who sense a vague unease about the state, and who are spoonfed controlled doses of controversy so that they feel more “alternative” and rebellious. Even the spirit of rebellion has been captured, diluted, homogenized and rebranded for mass manufacture. Who even knows what Che Guevara did? You wont ever get these people off their arses.
But that is juuuust fine. Each catastrophic political change in the worlds’ history had been preceded by comfortable complacency.
