I quite enjoyed "Sherlock" last night but, again, found it slightly disappointing in places. The 90 minute running time still seems way too long to me and I found myself getting slightly bored during last nights episode. I still think a 45 minutes 6 episode run would have been a much better way to bring the character of Sherlock Holmes (and John Watson, of course) back.
I hated the portrayal of Moriarty - so much so that the final ten minutes almost ruined everything that the three episodes had been building towards. Such a shame really as there was some great stuff in this 3-part series.
I'm not even comparing this portrayal with anything as I've not read any Holmes books (I understand that Moriarty only appeared in one novel. Is that right?) and I don't even remember what the portrayals were like in previous TV versions I'd seen. I had nothing to compare it to. I also have nothing against the actor involved. The way it was written just didn't work for me.
I liked Benedict Cumberbatch and Martin Freeman as Sherlock and John respectively, and their friendship was played really well. Just a shame that the second two episodes didn't live up to the expectations I saw in the first episode. I promised so much but ultimately just didn't deliver for me.
If it comes back (I'm assuming it's been renewed?) I'd like to see it reduced to 45 minutes. I think the show would benefit from that.
