Today Jo, Vicky and
hutchiebear met me after work and we went out for a nice birthday lunch - Dave got me a pop up "Primeval" birthday card and Vicky made me a "Primeval" card that said Connor and Abby wished me a dinotastic birthday! Lol! What am I? 8? Awesome cards though! I got a real kick out of them. Jo got me season four of "Medium" on DVD and Vicky got me a really cool Hello Kitty bag. Thanks guys!
After lunch we headed to the cinema and saw "District 9" which was actually quite different than I expected - I didn't realise it was gonna be in quite the style it was. It was good though.
The acting was flawless. The actors here might not have been big names (something that worked in its favour actually - given the nature of the movie) but they were certainly performing some big acting here. I couldn't pick any one standout as they were all perfect but Sharlto Copley in his first major role was amazing and carried the whole film better than some bigger names could have.
The effects were absolutely brilliant - everything looked so real you were actually unsure what was CGI, what was animatronics and what was something else entirely. Obviously the way everything was filmed added to that - especially the documentary scenes. Everything seemed to gritty. So dirty even. So real, I suppose. Sometimes I like films to have a gloss on them (who doesn't really?) but this film really wouldn't have benefited from that at all.
It was really nice to see something like this that isn't based in America - I'm not moaning about Americans wanted to set their films in their own country or anything but this just made a nice change. If aliens were to come who's to say they'd end up somewhere like New York or London anyway?
My only complaints are that there wasn't enough humour in it for my liking. I know it's a serious film and all but given that everything seemed to realistic I think it would have been nice to have a few more funny lines thrown in. There were a few at the beginning though. And it was a bit slow going in places - everything needed to be there though, in fact I can't think of any scene that didn't play an important part as the story slowly reached it's nicely open ending. It ended in a way that left you wondering things. Are the humans really more "human" than the aliens here? Who treated who better? And when it comes down it what will happen in three years when Chris returns (I'm assuming he will as he seems like someone who's true to his word)? Will Wikus really want to be fixed?
To sum up, a good film that while not quite as good as I was expecting is definitely worth a watch and might make you think. I can't actually compare it to anything else. You'll have to see it for yourself. 7.5 out of ten.
Trailers:
"2012" - John Cusak is due a hit and this could be it. It looks good, if a little familiar. I'll probably see it though.
"Law Abiding Citizen" - The first of two Gerard Butler movie trailers I saw today. This looks quite interesting but at the same time not really my kind of thing. I think I need to know more before I make a decision.
"Gamer" - the second Gerard Butler movie trailer of the day. Doesn't really appeal to me much. But it's got Dexter in it!
"Surrogates" - I really like the look of this one. An interesting premise and, judging by this trailer, Bruce Willis playing pretty much to type. I'll definitely be checking this out.
"The Firm" - not appealing to be at all. No interest. Not my kinda film.
In other news: last nights "Chuck" was good again! Looks like the spy stuff is gonna get in the way of Chuck and Morgans friendship again. Dammit! Morgan was so happy last night too. How's Chuck gonna explain to him that they can't move in together after all?
After that I watched "Warehouse 13" which I enjoyed again and I'm happy to see a potential story arc brewing. I'm really seeing Brennan and Booth in Agents Bering and Latimer. She seems so detached and early Brennan like and he's just so Booth. In fact I see so many other shows and characters in this show, I hope it finds its own identity soon.
I'm gonna watch the "Supernatural" season four extras later tonight! :)
