This afternoon I headed to the cinema for the first time this year! Yes, I know it's August but apparently the last film I saw at the cinema was "Gravity" back in November! I used to be a really regular cinema goer. I'm not sure when that changed or why but there it is.
Today I ventured out to see "What If". I thought it was a nice, cute movie and I enjoyed it. I think it was nice to see something light for a change.
Daniel Radcliffe was good in a role slightly different that we're used to seeing from him and I think he has just the right amount of natural charm and charisma for this kind of movie. At the heart of the movie, of course, was the relationship between Radcliffe's Wallace and Chantry (played by Zoe Kazan) so if there hadn't been some natural chemistry between them the movie wouldn't have worked - luckily they were really cute together in a friendship way at first and it was good to see their relationship progress as the movie went on. I think I'd describe their chemistry as quite understated and I really liked that. Zoe Kazan's Chantry was a really nice and realistic character and I really liked her (I also really liked her fashion sense). Wallace was a nice character too.
The characters of Wallace and Chantry were supported well by various friends and relatives. And I liked the way Chantry's boyfriend wasn't portrayed in a bad way - we didn't really get to know him that much but wasn't a bad guy and Chantry wasn't in a bad relationship with him. I thought that made quite a nice change for this kind of movie.
The script was pretty good and had some quite nice situations and lines of dialogue, although it didn't really make me laugh. It did make me smile a lot though.
You may have noticed that I've used the word "nice" quite a lot but that's only because it fits. This movie was just a nice movie and I'd recommend it if you like romantic comedies and want something different from the current batch of comic book movies. And stay for the end credits which feature a nice little animated continuation of the story. I think I'd probably give this a good, solid 7 and a half out of ten.
Trailers (seemed like a lot today):
"The Best of Me" - Based on a Nicholas Sparks and starring Michelle Monaghan and James Marsden. It looks okay but I don't think I'll be running out to see this. I might walk on if it was on TV.
"Horns" - another approaching Daniel Radcliffe starer. This looks really interesting. I think I'll try and see this when it opens (although it could be another 9 months before I go to the cinema again!). It'll be good to see Daniel tackle something different again.
"The Riot Club" - This looks similar to the movie "The Skulls" (what I remember of it anyway). This trailer didn't really inspire me but I might be tempted to watch it if it was on TV.
"Sex Tape" - from the makers of "Bad Teacher" and starring Cameron Diaz and Jason Segel. It doesn't really appeal to be, to be honest.
"Love, Rosie" - I thought this looked really sweet and I might be tempted to check this out.
"Pride" - Thought this looked okay but I don't think it's something I'd run out and see it.
In other news: I watched some shows last night. First up was "Resurrection" - 1x02 - think this show is pretty interesting and I'm looking forward in seeing how things play out as the season goes on. Obviously that Dad that's returned is a bad guy - I'm not sure if that has anything to do with his death of the big picture but it's probably gonna be quite important as the show goes on. I'm interested in Omar Epps' character too. There's an interesting back story there.
I also watched the last ever episode of "Nikita" - while I'm sad to see this show end (it's always sad when shows end) I couldn't help but feel a bit let down by this finale. While it was nice to see them have their happy ending it was kind of boring to watch. And the whole season seemed pretty rushed, which I think it was.
Then I watched "Under The Dome" - 2x01 - it was good to see this show again but I think it was a shame that they decided to kill off two of the main female characters so early on. Actually killing of main characters at the beginning of the season is quite a weird thing to do. It's usually a season finale thing! I'm interesting in the new guy - Sam, is it? - and the storyline about the drowning girl seems interesting.
Finally for last night I watched "The 100" - 1x08 - I thought this was a good episode, probably the best yet but I think that was because Bellamy was the focus. I really like his character and think he's the most interesting. And I like his relationship with Clarke (I might want to ship them) - and when she's with him she seems much more interesting than usual.
