So last night I headed to the opening night of McFly's four 10th Anniversary Celebratory shows at the Royal Albert Hall! It's hard to believe that they've been around for 10 years now! Where did the time go? While I probably haven't been there right from the beginning I wasn't too late to the McParty. My first McFly gig was the Wembley Arena show of the Wonderland Tour so I feel like I've been been with them for a long time still!
I always enjoy seeing these boys play so when tickets for this gig went on sale I just had to buy one! I couldn't miss this! The boys were brilliant as usual and their performances were intercut with some video clips from fans, "friends of the band" and the boys themselves talking about the things they've done over the past ten years. Some of the video clips worked really well and were perfect lead ins to certain songs but some of them became a little tiresome after a while (I didn't really need Chris Moyles or Keith Lemon wishing the band happy anniversary more than once).
The boys came on at 8.45pm and played for two hours straight finished at 10.45pm. They started, logically, from the beginning with a few songs from their first album - "Saturday Night", "Surfer Babe", "Obviously" and "Room on the Third Floor" - and then played songs from each of their albums - only two from "Wonderland" ("I'll Be Ok" and "I've Got You"), three from "Motion in the Ocean" ("Star Girl", "Little Joanna" (a tour first) and "Transylvania") and "One for the Radio" from "Radio:ACTIVE" - before one of the coolest moments of the night when the boys were joined on stage by 2/3 of Busted (James Bourne and Matt Willis. I wonder if Charlie was asked but said no?) for performances of "Year 3000" and "Air Hostess" - the appearance of Busted was proceeded by a video clip of Matt and James talking about how they met Tom etc which was one of the times when I thought the videos worked really well. The video fading to black and then the opening of "Year 3000" starting was pretty cool and the crowd went crazy when James and Matt appeared and sang along to all the words of the Busted songs. It was a pretty nostalgic moment, I have to be honest. Especially when it's been 8 years (I think?) since Busted split. McBusted them played "Shine a Light" which was the only song from "Above the Noise" played during the evening. While I'm not a big fan of that album I do think "Shine a Light" is a great song.
After that the Busted boys left the stage and the boys played their latest single "Love is Easy" before another highlight for me in the form of Tom's special 10th Anniversary song. A cute, funny and, at times, moving story of the band named "McFly: The Musical". I really enjoyed that song and I hope one of these Royal Albert Hall gigs ends up a live DVD just so I could hear it again. After the Tom solo we got a little Danny solo in the form of some Opera singing and "Walk in the Sun" which showed how good Danny's vocals can be. Then Tom and Danny when a little bit acoustic for "Not Alone" (which is one of my favourites of theres from the first album - and I always like it when bands go acoustic) before the hall was lit up by five different colours for the song that started it all "Five Colours in Her Hair" - that song always gets a good reception and the boys always seem like they love playing it still. Sometimes the rock it up a little bit more than the album version though.
Next was another one the video clips that worked well, one that was all about the new album and the hopes they all have for it. After watching this clip, and the song that followed it, I'm looking forward to album number 6! The new song they played is a track called "Love on the Radio" and after first listen is seems pretty good (and I think it might be the first single). After that we headed into the last two songs of the night, the biggest selling single so far, "All About You" and the song that's not so secretly about the band (apart from the "we are the lovers" part), "The Heart Never Lies". To be completely honest, "All About You" is probably one of my least favourite McFly songs but given the songs status they always play it! I did like the added brass section at the beginning of this performance though and "The Heart Never Lies" was a great song to finish on, especially with the changed lyric "10 years are over, we're still together, it's not always easy, but McFly's here for ever". I truly hope they are hear forever (or another few years at least) because I don't think I'll ever tire of watching these boys perform, it's honestly where they are at their best. Even if I go through a phase of not listening to the CD's for a while every time they do a tour I have to go and I remember just how good they are as a band. And how together they are. How close they are even after 10 years. I think it's why they've been around for 10 years really. Their closeness is why it works, they just compliment each other really well.
As usual the band were brilliant and come the 6th album and the tour that's sure to follow I'll definitely be booking my ticket! No matter how well their albums or singles do their shows always sell well and, as is mentioned in the programme, they play each show like it's their last.
