The Doctor stands solemnly by the console, hands resting against it. Martha, Jack, and Donna all stand around him. They didn’t find anything - well, not anything that he was hoping for. “The Medusa Cascade,” the Doctor whispers airily. “Perfect place. Almost have to hand it to him,” he says to himself, but he shakes his head and leans away.

“So we’re here, then?” Jack asks, because the women suddenly seem uneasy.

“Yeah…” the Doctor trails off, looking uncomfortable. “Reached the end of the line. The trail stops here.”

“But the planets?” Martha wonders carefully. She steps up next to him, staring down at the screen displaying the beautiful cascade; she almost wants to throw open the doors and gets a look. Now’s not the time, though. She can see quite clearly that the screen shows no planets. She looks up at the Doctor, but he’s closed himself off. “Doctor?” Where’s Earth? Where’s my family? Are they okay? She doesn’t ask him these things. She knows he won’t - can’t - answer.

Donna is losing it, though. Jack tries to calm her down, uncertain as the rest of them, but trying to be the strength that the Doctor isn’t offering. He holds her tightly as she sobs. She wanted to travel with the Doctor. She did! But this… she didn’t know about her family, she didn’t know about her friends, about anything! She wasn’t stuck on the desert-planet anymore, sure, but this still wasn’t what she wanted. This hopelessness. She could be on Earth now, wherever Earth was… but at least she would be with her family. The Doctor wasn’t answering them.

She shook herself, pulling herself away from Jack, giving one last look to him, and then moving out of the room.

None of them could handle this right now. Something needed to be done.

His work was spread out across the a white table of a forgotten lab within the TARDIS. The Doctor probably never touched it again - at the very least he never cleaned it, what with the remnants of materials one of the previous companions used to make Nitro-9. Troublesome stuff, really. The Master scoffed at seeing it. The Doctor needed a maid.

Carefully he works, fiddling with the device Rose pushed at him, knowing exactly what it’s meant to do, and he nearly has fixed it already. What he wants to do is replicate it. Thankfully, it doesn’t work like her so-called Dimension Cannon. It doesn’t pull on the remaining threads of her universe, if there are any left at all. Whatever Davros has been up to, he already had practice on one universe, by the sounds of things.

He wonders where the Tandoka Scale is leading them when Donna flies in, eyes stormy, but there’s a spark of something else in them. He’s surprised she even found him. Must’ve been by mistake. Either way, now she’s a distraction, and he wonders how long he can ignore her until she leaves him alone.

Instead, she angrily approaches him, lips flapping, demanding why he isn’t helping right now. “The Doctor’s a mess! He’s not talking to anyone, he’s just standing around like he’s given up!”

He sighs, narrowing his eyes and turning the circular object in his hand, using an actual screwdriver to work at an odd angle within it. “He’s always a mess, really. And I am helping, just not in the way you’re yammering on about. Now go away, I'm busy.”

To his honest-to-god shock, she slaps him. Donna Noble. The woman who cowers away from him when he glares at her. The woman who responds like a sad little puppy when he calls her useless. Same woman, slapping him. When the hell did she grow a spine?

He drops his work in surprise, stares at it, stunned, then rises after a moment, absolutely furious, and throws her into a wall. “You know, I never did like you much.”

Donna doesn’t stand down. She doesn't even waver. She stares at him with determination. “I don’t care. I thought you liked the Doctor, you know. But you're just sitting here, hiding!”

“I’m working!” he roars. “Which is quite vital if we want anything akin to success! And here you are, interrupting me, like the attention whore you really are -” She slaps him. Again. Cold fury fills his eyes and oh yeah, he’s going to kill her.

“So you’re just goin’ to leave him to suffer on his own then, ya? Useless bastard.” She storms off before he can ring her neck. He debates chasing her down, but he has work that needs finishing, and apparently a certain Doctor to save from the panicking pack of humans.

Absolutely wonderful.
