An issue of morality or an issue of modernity?

So, I've been thinking... In the past few weeks there have been at least 3 conversations where the topic of "cheating" (in the context of a girlfriend/boyfriend, spouse, etc.) has come up. And in these particular conversations, the people that I was talking to, condone cheating.

Not to "toot my own horn," but one of the things I pride myself on is being a very moral person. I get it from my dad... who always used to tell me when I was little, "Allison, ethics are what you do when no one is looking." And ever since, doing the right thing has always been very important to me.

Now upon talking with my friends... I start to wonder... Am I just idealistic to think that cheating is always wrong? Is it not so simple as I've found, that if you want to be with someone else, you should just break up with you who you're seeing, and be with the other person or people.

Perhaps part of it is because I've been cheated on quite a few times when I was younger, but I just don't understand how you could do something to someone else which you would hate if it were done to you. So this brings me to wonder, am I stuck in the past? Is cheating okay these days?
