"This is the life we chose, the life we lead. And there is only one guarantee: none of us will see heaven." ~Road to Perdition
"She's an angel, Shade! You can't let her come and go here as she pleases! We need to do something about it!"
Shade tilted his head, emotionless, and looked at Adam. "What do you suggest? Killing her? That'll only get us into a shitload more trouble that we don't need. She's not hurting anything, and she's not gonna convince me to go anywhere with her."
"You like having her around?!"
"I don't care."
"And I don't know who you are," Adam shook his head.
Shade smirked at that. "Oh, I'm exactly myself. You and Amy...you wanted the real Shade back? Well this is him. Better than ever."
"Amy didn't bother to mention the real Shade is such a coward."
"A coward? Hey, you know, if you don't like this you're welcome to leave."
Adam shook his head in disgust. "While you do what? Bide your time here with that angel until...well that would be forever, wouldn't it?"
"Gotta find some way to kill the time," Shade shrugged. "Fun-fare killing? Not really my thing."
"It's no wonder they played with you. You're pathetic like this."
"Look, you and Amy wanna go play your little demon games? Go ahead. Go be her little puppy dog. Otherwise, get used to how things are around here."
"In case you've forgotten, there's a war going on out there. A war that you've prepared me for. And it's only gotten nastier since all your little changes."
Shade shrugged, his hands out. "I don't really care. Let them all kill each other. Hell, let them finally kill me. Doesn't matter. I'm not a big fan of either side."
"Only a fool would stand in the middle."
"Guess I'm a fool then."
"What about your friends? Amy? Myself? Are you content in watching us die?"
Shade's jaw twitched at that and he shook his head. His eyes cast down. "Of course not. All the more reason for you two to do what you need to do."
Adam shook his head slowly. "You really think anyone will spare your life because you're standing neutral?"
"No. And if one of those bastards - light or dark - can figure out a way to kill me? All the power to 'em. I don't want any fucking eternity."
"Fine." Adam turned, sparks flying from his hand in anger and hitting the ground. Shade watched him with a slight smile.
"Not like you need me, Adam."
The demon swung around with a glare, his hand out. Flames licked his skin and flew over Shade's shoulder. "Liam," he said sharply. "That's who you made me into. Your new found cowardliness doesn't change that."
Shade dodged the fire and watched Adam closely. "Guess time will tell if that comes with regrets," he said cooly.
Adam gave him one final glare before blinking out of the warehouse they had been sitting in. Shade stood up straight and sighed in the absence of his friend. He wasn't going to learn a helluva lot from Shade anymore. Liam had no more use for him and needed more than he'd find there. If Shade wanted the new demon to make it through the war, someone else was going to have to guide him.
