And so it begins....(again)

Well, here I am with renewed determination to keep a journal of my innermost thoughts and wonderings. This weekend was actually a really nice one. Not only did the weather decide to grace our little home with some fine sunshine but I also chalked up yet another enjoyable day in the company of my parents, and Zoe did too.

I had a pretty dire upbringing for the most part, mainly revolving around my dad various addictions and psychological troubles and near four years ago I had all but sworn him off and simultaneously lost anything I had in common with my mother. Around this time I began the first steps of creating a family of my own, finding a beautiful wife in Zoe and knowing that she would make a wonderful mother and would help me be a good father.

For a while it seemed that my new family would have nothing do with my parents. But over the last year that is no longer the case. Not only have I been able to find the things my mother and I had in common but I have also found a hobby in common with my father; birdwatching.

Now when we meet we're meeting for a purpose, with things to talk about. My dad, in a move that has won him my respect when I never thought it possible, has broken his addictions and is treating my mother with love. She in turn, smiles more than I've ever seen her and is taking more pride in her appearance. And not only do they now have things in common with me, but they have things in common with Zoe. My dad, in preparation for their visits, always brings with him a big bag of beads for Zoe that he collects at bootfairs, and it's one of the nicest things I've ever known him to do.

And now having the four of us in a room once in a while is actually pretty lovely. This weekend we even went to the Natural History Museum together, and watching Zoe and my dad talk every now and again about a dinosaurs foot or a Sea Shell's colour, while mum told me (in great detail) about the last book she'd read or film she'd seen, made me very happy indeed.
