Angel does a much better job of denying the relationship and denying his feelings, but when all is said and done, Angel loves Spike and thinks Spike is the most beautiful thing he’s ever seen. (That’s what I and many others choose to believe.)
Spike is very loyal to those he loves: Angel, Drusilla, and Buffy. All three have treated him badly, but he will stay until they boot him out. In fact, it seems that Spike is drawn to those who hurt him and treat him badly. You can see this clearly on the show in season 6 and even with him and Dru. Angelus, being the most bad-ass vampire on the face of the earth in his day, was very abusive to Spike when they both ran together. Spike learned to see this abuse as the only show of love he would get. I think this is a really important aspect of Spike’s personality and it certainly leads to a great deal of angst in fanfic, because authors love to hurt Spike too, and readers love it as well. Spike just seems to have “hurt me” stamped on his forehead, poor thing. There are many dark fics where Spike is absolutely put through the ringer. If you haven’t seen Buffy, Season 5, Episode 14 “Crush”, watch it immediately. It’s a hoot.
In most fics I’ve read, Spike and Angel are not equals and Spike usually bottoms. As I said, the relationship between Angel and Spike is very complicated. And fanfic covers just about every variation of the relationship. I can read a fic where they are in a loving domestic relationship one day and then another fic the next day where they hate each other, and both will be true. Although the most common belief is that Spike is sub to Angel, in many ways, Spike is much more evolved and forward thinking. Angel is unable to express his feelings, and frankly he is a big dumb brute sometimes!
Lastly - almost everyone agrees that Angel is Spike’s sire.
I took a break from doing recs for a while, but I am writing them again (in Word). I want to get 50 of them written, and then I will post them all. It’s nice to know you enjoyed them. I never really know who is poking through my journal. Please friend me if you care to. When I next post a batch of recs, you will know. Another place I like to go for recs is buffyversetop5. You can use the memories to search for Spangel. You will also find great recs for vids there. The reason I like that site is that the person giving the rec tells a little something about the story and says why he or she likes the story.

Gosh, I felt so much of this in the episode 'Destiny.' I could almost feel Spike’s pain, the way in which Angel was beating him into submission, "You can take anything you want, have anything you want, but nothing is yours. Especially not her."
The scene in which Angel stands behind Drusilla, presenting her to Spike and says, "Come and take her," Spike jumps up and... Cut scene! I am fascinated as to why they chose to cut the scene there! What really happened? Did Spike go to Drusilla and fucked her while Angel held her and watched? (There must be a ton of fic dedicated to that scene!) Did they cut the scene in this way so I would think such a thing? Or did Spike attack Angel and Angel simply beat the crap out of him?

I can now see how very true this statement is. The two vamps have known each other for over two decades, making their relationship possibly more complex than learning how to make good quality fan vids. And that really is saying something ;-)

I love your journal, so I have friended it! I hope that’s ok :-) Recs are *such* an important thing to have when your new to a fandom, I’d be utterly lost without them! My only problem is that I lurk a great deal (usually due to energy restrictions) so I don’t get the chance to tell as many people as I would like -- as to how great I think their work/art/fics/recs are, which I understand must be very frustrating when you’re the writer or reccer in question and getting no feedback!
Well, I am off to plough through buffyversetop5 memories! It looks like an excellent comm! :D

I also should have noted that the viewpoint I shared with you is a Spangel viewpoint. For Spander fans, the characterization of Spike and Angel may be slightly different.
