Sounds like a Darwin award nominee...the school, that is. It's called conditioning. You do something so stupid and hurtful, but when you return to normal society, you are given a happy ceremony which valididates your actions. How many times do you think he's driven drunk since that accident?

Can an entire society receive a Darwin award?

And, Matt, I agree wholeheartedly. But it sounds like you're trying to convince. Are you reaching out to someone who doesn't believe it to be terrible?

I think he's more appauled than anything.

As he should be.

I probably would've done the same thing with that guy, realistically. But if something happened, it'd be a horrible thing to have to live with.

That's what I hate about irresponsible drunks, is they put an unavoidable burden of responsibility on any sober person around.

It's insane what transgressions people can forgive/warp in their minds...

I don't necessarily believe that someone like that should be made a martyr, but to make some kind of hero out of him is ridiculous.
