Ran blinked, though she didn't look at Conan, continuing to scrub away at the clothing. "How else do you wash clothes, child? And I wash them because they are all the clothes I have."
"You are a child, are you not?" Ran said, teasingly, though there was a hint of question in it.
"You're the second to have mentioned the machines," Ran said, shaking the haori out to look at it. "I do not know that I trust them to do a woman's work. And I have no need of new clothes. These have served me well."
"I don't know what you speak of. Surely Shinichi is Shinichi and Conan is ... whatever Conan is." Ran rinses off her hands and stands, giving the child a thoughtful look. "I know myself, child. You are asking strange questions today."
"If I do, I have yet to know about it," Ran said. "I think you mistake me for someone else." It was clear to Ran that they were from different worlds; the differences in clothing, the ... glasses ... Conan wore -- it had to be.
Conan frowned. "...but maybe I can tell you what's up," he said. "Since he's me. Or...he's Shinichi-niichan, but then we just have to find you that sort of Conan."

Conan looked even more confused. "But....that..." Pauses. "...how modern are those clothes?"

"Modern?" Ran glanced again at Conan. "They're not new, but neither are they old-fashioned. We can't afford to follow the fashions of Edo or Kyoto."
