Ne! Ne! Summer is tons of fun, isn't it? I think it's my favorite season so far! I loved spring with all the flowers around but summer also has flowers and it has many other things!

Like... Watermelons, soumen, ice-cream, shaved ice, salted sweetfish, gelidium jelly... [Isn't all that food?] And many other things! Like going on a camping trip and ( Read more... )

I love summer. The weather, all the events that happen, the good food, I love it all.

Ginia-neesan~! Summer is the best season, isn't it?

[The kid is absolutely happy to see you. Or read you, whatever.]

... Which season comes after it, anyway?

[Was it winter already?]

Yes, it really is. I like Spring too, it's very pretty.

[And in turn, she's very happy to hear you.]

Fall, but sometimes it's called Autumn.

Spring has so many flowers, but it's cold at times. Summer has flowers too and it's warm.

What's Autumn like?

[He wants to know what's in store for the next season.]

Spring can be cold and rainy, but it's so all the flowers can grow.

Autumn is a little cooler. Sometimes it can be very rainy depending on the area, but some areas still remain a little warm. But it's the time when all the leaves change color - orange, red, yellow - and begin to fall off the trees. It's very beautiful.

Flowers like cold? I thought they liked the sun better.

The leaves change color? That's cool! How do they do that?

They do, but they need rain to grow.

I'm afraid I don't really know the process behind it. I know it happens naturally, but it's not really anything I can easily explain. Sorry.

Can't we just give them water everyday? Then it wouldn't have to rain.

It happens naturally... Like how meat goes from red to brown when it's cooked?

I know it's not a lot of fun, but rain is important. It keeps rivers, lakes, and ponds full of water too.

Yes, in a way. Both things happen for different reasons, but they're similar too.

[Wait, what.]

You mean without rain rivers, lakes and ponds would be left without water? Why??

... So orange leaves can't be eaten?

[Juuust making sure, but the comparison made him wondera bout that.]

It's a process called evaporation. If you take a glass of water and leave it out, you'll notice the water level goes down over time. The water is being drawn back into the air. It's a part of a process called the water cycle. The same thing happens with rivers, lakes, and ponds. They can't refill without rain.

I can't imagine they'd taste very good at all.

Can't we just put a cover on them so they don't lose water?

You'd need very big covers. Even the ocean loses water to evaporation, though since it's so big you can't tell. But the world needs rain, even if it is gloomy.

[The child hums for a long moment.]

I suppose. I don't mind rain that much, but it got me sick before and because of it I couldn't go out to play much.

You have to remember to bundle up when it's cold outside and dry off if you get too wet. I like the rain sometimes, listening to it can be very relaxing.

[Yeah, dry off and bundle up aren't things he really thinks about.]

If I do that I won't get sick?
