Short music reviews before work.

I didn't start really listening to music until I was 14 or so, and even then a Nirvana obsession kept me from really appreciating any other music. Nevertheless, I had heard of this band Throwing Muses and the stuff I had heard was good. On Sunday night I heard the lead singer's new band, 50 Foot Wave, on Seattle's KEXP (courtesy of ITunes). They were excellent, reminding me of the good stuff indie rock from the early to mid '90s I still often listen to. Check them out if you get a chance.

Also, a very cool band from DC that I've discovered recently is Plink. They're basically an electronic duo with a female singer who write songs by sending each other music over the Internet, a la Postal Service or Kilowatthours. To tell the truth, I am a sucker for female voices, but the great thing about Plink is that they encase the vocal in a swath of barely there piano and the occasional blip and bloop. I listen to so-called "quiet bands" more often than not; I find them relaxing and yet... energizing.
