A/N: I actually posted this about a month ago on YouTube, since I wanted it to be released on time for the JIB 2016 bookings. Months ago I came up with this little project before attending my first JIB: I'll make a vid. How original! It was supposed to be a small tribute to the 2010-2014 cons as a warm up. No longer than 30 seconds. 40 Seconds, tops. *nods* Quickly enough I realized it was just too much work with all this footage and decided I'll make one for JIB 6 after the con, instead. Great plan, right? Right. So I ended up working with footage from all 6 years instead of 5. *headdesk* A huge thanks to anyone who filmed and uploaded clips and panels through the years. More notes after the vid, hope you enjoy!
This took ages to finish! I have so much more respect to cons and RPS vidders now. No shortcuts with research, no transcripts to help cheating. Finding those little moments is a lot trickier than it seems, especially when it's not just J2M involved.
Looking back at this vid I'm not happy with the result. Too many missed cues, jumpy editing, tons of problems. I still decided to post in case someone would be interested and so I have it archived here as well.
The thing I was struggling with the most was probably not having a 'story' or lyrics to follow as a guideline. I usually first start with a rough timeline for the story I want to tell then match it to the beat, but Uptown Funk is mostly nonsense and the Shake It Off parody isn't exactly deep poetry either. I did refer to the lyrics in certain points (usually very literally), but mostly I tried to work to the beat.
Speaking of the beat, this was my first attempt at working with overlays. I'm not a fan of artificial transitions and effects that are pretty common in fanvids though, and I worked with real 4k lightning clips. Wow, I sound like the biggest snob ever! But honestly I couldn't agree more with this. Any vidder or vid lover should watch this.
The music. Heh. It was supposed to be Uptown Funk and a cover version of Shake it Off from the start, so I was thrilled when the Hillywood parody came out. I regretted those choices later though, especially Uptown Funk. It's a fun song, but really, really hard to vid. I probably have 4 or 5 entirely different versions of this part. As for the parody, this thing is 7 minutes long!!! I messed around with it a lot, hello audio editing, but I kinda like the result.
9 Things I learned about JIB while working on this: 1. While in the states it's usually Jared who takes the lead, in JIB it's usually Jensen. 2. Although there's no cabaret, karaoke or a band on stage, there's a whole lot of dancing. *Everyone dance in Rome! 3. *Everyone but Jared. Jared never dances. The parts where he 'dances' in the vid are manipulated. 4. The guys really like their apple juice. 5. The Cockles panels are always pure gold. It might have something to do with fact #4. 6. There aren't nearly enough J2 moments. Jared attended only 4 out of 6 cons, one of them he spent injured and the schedule is always so busy there's just one J2 panel each year. 7. They throw crap at the audience. A lot. 8. ..Sometimes the audience throws it back at them. 9. JIB has unique traditions and inside jokes, and if there's such thing as 'classic' con moments, they produced so many of those in just 6 cons. Some are part of the con like the opening ceremony (see #7), but mostly it's the stuff the happens only in Rome. Playing with the screen, drinking on stage, pretending to be fans (preferably with accents) while crashing panels - it's all unique to JIB.
