Perl, PHP and RoR... Oh my!

I'm having a hard time figuring out which language(s) to do web programming with for my independent study. My project is basically creating a complete website for the Library Science student association that looks nice and is also functional.
I've been considering Perl, PHP, and Ruby on Rails. My professor/advisor is also learning Ruby on Rails ( Read more... )

By native, I meant it wasn't written originally for a focus on web programming. It is quite popular in that respect now, but you can just see from the fact that an introductory PHP book already has you doing things on the Web, while Learning Perl barely touches on it.

Also, the fact that there are separate books on focused on Perl and Web Development, as well as Ovid's CGI Programming Course. The fact that Perl uses (though not quite "requires" but you'd be crazy not to) a module to make Web Programming work makes me class it as not native.

Of course, you can probably get technical, but I'm not here to split hairs. I base my "failed" assertion on the original purposes of the language (Larry wanted a scripting language that combined, while overcame some of inefficiencies the basic UNIX tools at his disposal had, not specifically a language to take care of CGI at the time), compared to PHP (which was originally designed by Rasmus to take care of his site).

While Perl is used constantly for purposes outside of Web Programming, I don't see PHP really being used that way. If someone did, I'd probably look at them funny and wonder what the hell they're doing.

So yeah, my def. heh.
