Faceless
by Robert Saari
Back to back
we sat at adjoining tables
eating Chinese food
each ignoring
the presence of the other.
Your lunchtime laughter
and my tableside chatter
joined the general hub overhead
near the cieling
seeking escape.
There was no sign
we had ever
even known each other,
no hello,
no nod of recognition,
only the truce
and silence
of our faceless sides.
