This song served as my introduction to Siouxsie and the Banshees back in 1991. I always admired the song, which had a catchy chorus and an unusual musical sound of strings covered by a thumping dance rhythm. Of course, I had no idea what the lyrics referred to at the time, but after listening to the Siouxsie/Morrissey duet "Interlude" on my iPod tonight, it jarred a memory in my brain of
the video. The poster had very kindly typed all of the lyrics to the song, and I discovered a tip to the meaning behind them in a post in the comments section. It seems the song was a tribute to
Jayne Mansfield, a fact of which I was not aware. Somehow the knowledge makes the song just that much cooler in my book. It also solidifies even further my belief that lyrics are often as important as the music they are set to. I love it when a song tells a story or contains witty/beautiful/creative phrasing. In other words, I love music that not only speaks to my feet but my heart and head, as well.
Hope you enjoy.
