zaknafein_d and I spent the evening cleaning out the closet in the computer room. While rearranging, we came across a tote and a printer box full of videos we'd recorded. Some of these were labeled; some were not. The vast majority appear to be assorted recordings of Babylon 5 episodes made during its run on the Sci-fi channel in the late 1990s. These, of course, belong to
zaknafein_d. We did come across two videos I appear to have made. One was a recording of a Halloween marathon of Quantum Leap. The other contained a PBS airing of The American, adapted from the novel by Henry James and starring Matthew Modine, and Tron.
While looking through the totes, I also found a video labeled MTV July 25, 1991. (Remember when MTV actually showed videos?) I popped it into the player to find it immediately started with the top five video requests of the day. This sounded promising, or at least interesting, so I watched. The countdown consisted of 5) "Pop Goes the Weasel" by 3rd Bass, 4) "Shout It Out Loud" by Slaughter, 3) "Motownphilly" by Boyz II Men, 2) "Everything I Do (I Do It for You) by Bryan Adams and 1) "You Could Be Mine" by Guns and Roses.
I suppose I shouldn't have been so surprised to find that three of the five videos contained songs from movie soundtracks. "Shout It Out Loud" was from Bill and Ted's Bogus Journey, "Everything I Do" from Robin Hood: Prince of Thieves and "You Could Be Mine" from Terminator II. There was a time when I was thoroughly sick of "Everything I Do," because it got such intense airplay. Watching the video, I remembered how much I actually enjoyed the movie. I also had a good chuckle at the sight of Alan Rickman. It's hard to imagine a time when I didn't think he was the epitome of cool, but I was lucky to even know his name back in '91. I'd also forgotten how good T2 was. I probably haven't watched either of those films in over ten years.
I stopped the tape once Downtown Julie Brown's dance show came on, but I'll probably watch more of it later. Should prove to be an entertaining little trip down memory lane if nothing else.
"Wubba wubba" all.
