journal; thunder_ace canon→ magical girl lyrical nanohaFate is a warm, patient, admirable woman, and those qualities are precisely why she had a lot of trouble getting close to Mami; the girl tends to view parental figures with a bitter mix of mistrust and longing, given the heavy regret she carries over the deaths of her mother and father. She puts in an extra amount of effort to keep her distance from older people like Fate because she never wants to end up replacing the family she lost. And yet, because Fate has never once failed to be there for Mami during troubled times, she's slowly become a very important person...to a greater extent than Mami herself even realizes. Fate gave her a place to stay when the girl first arrived; she was by Mami's side when they (along with Vivio) entered the Labyrinth and experienced its horrors; she was even there to hold her during the aftermath of that trial by fire. Fate always gave Mami her support and affection without wanting anything in return, and in doing so finally managed to reach the young girl. While Mami will never see Fate as a mother, she's secretly proud to count her as a trusted friend.
Fate has vanished from the Gardens at quite probably the worst possible time; after having old wounds laid open again by the warped, hateful apparitions wandering around, Mami became an emotional wreck and in sore need of comfort. However, it's comfort that Fate was no longer around to give. Although the brief discussion they had before the event began helped things somewhat, in that Mami can't bring herself to be bitter at Fate for involuntarily disappearing, the older woman's absence still hurts and has only made Mami even more reluctant to open up to maternal types in the future.
Fate has been gone for quite awhile now. Time, and Mami's own efforts to change as a person, has slowly healed the wounds her departure left behind. It's for the best that Mami stops allowing her thoughts, whenever they happen to stray to the older woman, to be a thing that hurts; instead, Mami is doing her best to draw a comforting inspiration from the memory of Fate's persistent kindness. She would like to see Fate again...but she knows better than to be so selfishly naive as to hope for that small wish to come true. Rather, Mami will content herself with the belief that Fate is happy being back home where she belongs, and so move on with her life.
