Thoughts Related to the First Day of Classes

I should have come up with a good fake answer for the "Why are you studying Chinese?" question. I really don't have a good answer yet. "Because I enjoy it!" is always met with puzzled looks and a nervous laugh. But the lamest answer I've heard is "Because I like Chinese culture." What does that even mean? You like eating food with chopsticks? You dig Confucius? Can't you be just a bit more specific?

It's the first day of class and I already don't like some of my classmates. There's one guy in my newspaper reading class who speaks quickly and sloppily and seems honestly surprised when the teacher corrects him, like, "Wha? You mean I'm not fluent?" It's so obnoxious. But it also poses a bit of a challenge. I know language study isn't a competition, but I'm going to relish the oppurtunity to correct him or one-up him in class. I guess straight white males are supposed to be self-assured and confident, but don't they know it's just a bit repulsive? Someone should send out a memo.

The few times I've told a Chinese teacher that I like to dance (which I did today with my incredibly kind one-on-one professor), they always get this look of shock on their faces. Is there some mold of dance-liking guys that I'm just not fitting?
