honestly, i'm for it. i agree with the european stance: legalize smaller, less dangerous drugs like marijuana, and make harsher penalties for more dangerous drugs like cocaine and heroin.
i have a few reasons for this:
1. it then becomes a taxable commodity, like tobacco and alcohol.
2. if we put government regulations on it, it becomes safer. some pot that you buy on the streets is mixed with some dangerous shit and is very not clean, but if it were regulated like the tobacco industry, it would be much more pure and much less dangerous (disregarding the hazards of inhaling smoke).
3. this would be beneficial to the global economy; the land in some countries is only conducive to crops like marijuana and coca. if we legalize marijuana, we can create legal trade with these countries, which destroys the organized crime aspect and benefits the economy of that country, which is, in the end, beneficial to the world economy.

i dont think it will become a taxable property. instead it will remain where it is, the basements, closets and farmland of america. i also dont think the global economy argument holds weight; something other than cocoa and marijuana grows in countries all over the world. it would however destroy the profit margin of cartels around the world, which is a good thing.

i recently saw a debate between steve hager, a former editor of high times magazine and bob stutman, a former DEA agent who was called 'mr. narc.' that is what triggered this whole entry.

anyway, hager argued that marijuana legalization would stop the funding of cartels, and hes right. he also was very anti plantation growing; his natural distrust of big business. he feels that growing marijuana for personal use is harmless and should be legalized, though he was vehemently against selling any drug for profit.

using that view, we should also ban caffine, alcohol, cigarettes, tv and those little sugar covered pieces of heaven called peeps. i agree with max that punishment should be lessened for people convicted of 'possession,' though stiffened for those with intent to sell. and instead of throwing people in jail, they should be given the help of a clinic. and the total eradiction of any drug from society is ummm, impossible. witness prohibition, and our current 'WAR ON DRUGS'

umm im against it. but the thing is ive never tried it, so i think that for you to be able to give an opinion about it you must be in "their shoes", you know what i mean. like, i dont know how serious it is, so i cant say that im for or against it. but im too scared to try it so i'll keep living a life of weed ignorance ( ... )
