Yesterday was pretty productive after 5 days of radio duty. I was assigned to the Rescue for my half-shift day. The Crew Boss and I went through all of the compartments and toyed with ways to make the Rescue unit operate more efficiently. We ended up switching the locations of some of the tools, as well as made adjustments to some of the pre-connected rescue tools. The Captain in charge of operations seemed pleased with what we did, so that made yesterday morning pretty rewarding. Our Chief came back from his R&R three days ago. I hope to sit down and talk to him a bit once he gets settled back in and caught up on everything.
A lot of people have arrived here over the past 8 days... a few new officers, one who just came back from training, and a couple of firefighters just getting back from R and R... it is getting kind of crowded. I've been trying to keep myself as busy as I can. I took some time to work on a project that I didn't finish before I left home. I've also been reading my EMT-I book so that I won't have any questions when I go and take the class over in January 07.
Apparently the insurgents have been hammering Falluja over the past few days with rockets and mortars. Haven't heard too many details on it, but I have a friend who got assigned there keeping me somewhat up to date. It's hard to tell when something like that is going to happen, we've been 'on alert' for the past few days, but nothing has happened here. There are times when things seem a little bit.. erie. Every now and then, a nearby mosque will call for prayer an hour earlier than they usually do... a few moments later, gunfire is heard coming from a guard tower or somewhere beyond the wall. Sometimes at night we'll notice the lights flicking on and off from the mosque tower. I'm waiting for the night when we'll see what all the flickering is about.
Thank you Sam and Megan for the letters. Have a great day, everyone. I'll try to get a few more pictures up later tonight.
