Abu Ghraib: Day 192

Dec 11, 2005 22:48

We had just pulled into the Chow Hall parking lot on Friday night when we heard an explosion. I whip my head to the left, as does the rest of the crew on the Engine. It sounded like a car bomb, and from the cloud of grey smoke now beginning to mushroom over the main wall, it appeared to be also. I hopped out of the driver seat of the Engine and watched the remaining smoke float up into the pre-dusk sky. The rest of the crew had lost interest already and headed inside, not that I blame them. Car bombs outside the wall are a common occurrence around here. I joined them a few moments later, after most of the smoke had dissipated.

That night before I went to bed, just like every night, I checked the news. An article on CNN.com rambled on about the 4 peace workers being held hostage. At the end of the article was a little blurb about a soldier being killed by a car bomb outside of Abu Ghraib.

Last night as I was getting into bed my roommate and I heard a lot of gun fire outside the wall. Not sure what was going on, we were told to stay inside. I found out this morning that the hundreds of rounds that I heard going off last night were in celebration. Iraq beat Syria in a soccer game. Good for Iraq.
