Maaaan... it's been an interesting and crazy week.
First off, I'm an uncle. My brother's girlfriend had her baby, after a sudden hemmorage that could have led to her losing the baby (had they shown up10 minutes later than they did). My brother named him AEthan Nathaniel Channell (that's just pronounced "Ethan"... and it's that greek symbol... crazy, eh?), which has a pretty cool ring to it.
The RAISING THE STAKES AND MINI-CINEMA FESTIVAL WEBSITES are currently down. I'm quite distressed. My friend Häakon hosts our sites on his showchoir.com server and I have not been able to login to upload any new updates. Actually, it did let me login and upload... but the files didn't transfer all the way and now all the pages are completely blank! Looks like I might finally be buying the IWC Films domain name...
Went to Point Park today for an interview for the Cinema/Digital Arts department... I'm almost certain that I won't be going there. Tuition is $16,000 and I can only get $12,000 in scholarships for sure. Plus, I'd be forced to only make 5-10 minute shorts and focus solely on writing, directing, cinematography, or editing. In other words, I'd only be writing or I'd only be directing... and so-on. The head of the department didn't even watch all of my films and rushed me through the interview in less than a half hour, then quickly showed me the facilities. I didn't even get time to finish discussing my favorite directors, so I didn't get to discuss my love for George A. Romero, David Lynch, etc.
The way I see it, is film school actually necessary? Lots of directors didn't go to school for film. I can go to WVU for something related, like communications or something and keep doing films on the side in the summer or during vacations. As for the contacts you make in a film school like Point Park, the way I see it, I can go up there during student screenings to scout for my festival, since I'll be driving and all. Then I can get to know some of the people up there interested in film and possibly get some future crews and collaborators.
In other words, I'd be continuing my own private film school I first enrolled in back in 2001 when I first started playing with Josh Lively's Digital8 camera.
I think it might work... at least I hope.
